  • FDA says walnuts are drugs

Utterly ridiculous but not surprised. “The FDA’s language,” Faloon writes, “resembles that of an out-of-control police state where tyranny [reigns] over rationality.”

The claim that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified walnuts as drugs is inaccurate. This misconception likely stems from a 1998 warning letter issued by the FDA to Diamond Foods. The letter addressed the company's marketing materials, which presented health claims about walnuts in a manner that suggested they were intended for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease. This positioned the walnuts as unapproved drugs under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The issue was not with the nuts themselves, but with how the company advertised their purported health benefits.
