Shingles are also known as the herpes zoster virus. It's a virus that stays with you after you have chickenpox and typically returns in old age from stress or immunosuppression. Can be treated with Valtrex

Thanks, I know what it is and have had it unfortunatley. The clinical name can make people who do not understand think other things. It has nothing at all to do with the type of herpes that is transmitted sexually. Anyone who has had chicken pox is susceptible to shingles. The chickempox virus lyes dormant in our spinal nerves and can be activated at any point in our lives. thanks baby1

                Re: Shingles

I've been going thru tests for some horrible back pain. Yesterday, the doc brought up shingles but threw me a curve and said that "some" people, not many, develop internal shingles. No outward sign of rash or skin change-just pain. They concluded that I don't have this as shingles will follow the nerve line. I'm just a back busted mo fo. Anyway, if you don't have the typical rash, don't rule it out. Good luck to those who do have to contend with shingles.

This is true and my neurologist dld me this as well. Lower lumbar sacral pain can be caused by shingles . A siple run of an anti viral med would help ir if ir was shungles. You think he may try that when all other things have neem exhausted
