  • psychotropic medications

My brother just started some heavy duty psychotropic medications about a month ago. He used to be a smart guy but not he is an idiot. I am emotionally exhausted from dealing with him. I used to work as a counselor for mentally and physically challenged adults and the ones that exhausted me the most was the high functioning mentally retarded. That is the functioning level my brother is in.
He has been trying to get disability for about 2 years and has not worked. He looks on the internet for symptoms to tell his psychiatrist that is what he has. He has been turned down for all his appeals for disability, he wants to refile for it and do it all again.
With the meds he is on now I can't and will not handle it. What he needs is to get his sorry a$$ a job.

I will give some examples of the silly stuff he does. He got a job at the gym I go to for 6 hours a month as a maintenance just to pay his membership. It was raining that morning so I asked him if he wanted to wear the motorcycle rain suit on his motor scooter. He said no it looked uncomfortable. He took off and came back 10 minutes later drenched said he can not work that day. He dried off and I took him in.

Today we went to my bank so he could cash a rebate check, he signed the back of the check and walked off. He was in my truck. I asked him why he said he thought they were through with me. We had to go back in he showed his id and got his money.

    Many more examples like these.

What should I do? I am so emotionally exhausted now it is affecting my health and social life.

That has to be very hard and what is more hard is he is your brother and you want to help him. Now that it is affecting you, I really think that you need to take care of you and let him face whatever consequences that may come to him. Does he live on his own? Has he seemed to have gotten worse since he started these meds?

wow dirt, this is up my alley, i work with not mr's but high functioning former drug addicts that made them ill. your 56 and you need to bring in a social worker and let you have a life. if he is using the dmsr5 to calculate his illnesses to the system, the phychiatrist will know. i have patients that try to get anti-pychotics to get high which none of it does this but they dont know that these are powerful meds and can cause tardive dyskineasia and such. is he delisional, hearing things, thinking the goverment has it out for him? i would get him to a phychiatrist, but before hand tell the dr hes doing it for disability, then let the dr make his decision. you go on with your life brother. but see wat a independent dr will tell you before u get a social worker because once they get involved its alot of work he will do. but remember he is family but again you cant ruin your life for anybodys. i wish you the best dirt and god bless, unclem
