When you think grandma, you generally think of fragile old ladies. Willie Murphy, a grandmother, surprises many people when they see her at the gym lifting 215 pounds.

The 77-year-old woman is 105 pounds, but she has never let her size stop her from reaching her weight-lifting goals. After she saw a sign hanging at her gym about a weight-lifting competition. She asked an employee if she could compete and he responded, "Go for it, granny."

That is when Murphy started picked up a pair of five-pound weights and never looked back, Democrat & Chronicle reported.

In addition to dead lifting 215 pounds, the senior can also perform one-handed pull-ups, one-handed pushups, fingertip pushups and even performs pushups where she touches her nose to the floor.

While many people marvel at her, Murphy sticks to being all natural in her approach to fitness. "None of those steroids for me," she said.

What is even more surprising is the 77-year-old woman eats whatever she wants, including Pizza Hut on football days. Then on Monday, Wednesday and Friday she heads to the gym for weight lifting and power walking.

Since she began lifting, Murphy won her division in the dead lift competition at the WNPF World Championships. She also won several other awards, including first-place in power curl, bench press, bench press repetitions and the World Natural Powerlifting Federation 2014 Lifter of the Year award.

Since her victory at the competition she has been receiving a lot of positive feedback at the gym. When she is there people constantly stop to congratulate her or ask to touch her biceps.

"They see I'm old and I'm not being pushed around in a wheelchair," said Murphy. "I can shovel my own snow. And I can push my car if it gets stuck in the snow... I'm almost 80 years old and I am still living life."

Many people her age suffer from different bone and joint disease. However, those who observe Willie Murphy can tell she's in great health.

"She is so spunky, sweet and inspirational," added Lisa Greer, director of administration and member services at the gym Murphy attends. "I couldn't do half the things she does."

Weight training and exercise are essential for people during their old age. Experts urge older people to get out and exercise regularly.
