Best in the World? Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin Fail to Impress at UFC 116 by JonathanSnowden on Jul 4, 2010 2:06 AM EDT in Events

Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan called Brock Lesnar's title defense against the relatively unknown Shane Carwin the biggest heavyweight promotion in MMA history. We'll know next week whether that was true when the pay per view numbers trickle out, but certainly Fedor-Cro Cop and even Sylvia-Couture had significantly more buzz in the community. Goldberg made another claim I think we can dispute right away: he said these were the two best heavyweights in the world. I saw something different. I saw a wildly entertaining fight between two guys who are still nowhere near finished products in the cage. To channel Georges St. Pierre for a moment, while I was entertained, I was "not impressed with their performance."

We learned a few things about Brock Lesnar tonight. We confirmed what many suspected: Brock Lesnar doesn't like to get hit. As soon as Carwin touched him, Lesnar did more than cover up. He flat cowered against the cage. He wasn't hurt as much as terrified. Make no mistake-Carwin had that fight won. Against anyone who isn't the promotion's heavyweight champion, that fight gets stopped due to some brutal ground and pound.

Lucky for Lesnar, Carwin isn't merely a one-round fighter. He doesn't event have that much in him. Three minutes into the bout and Carwin's heaving breaths couldn't feed his mammoth muscles. Lesnar survived, less because of his own defensive prowess and more because Carwin gassed and gassed bad.

We learned a few things about Shane Carwin, too. When the fight went to the second round, Carwin was no longer participating. He looked like he was approaching a heart attack and was like a spectator at his own execution. Lesnar took him to the mat with a sloppy tackle and shortly thereafter finished him with an arm triangle. It was hardly a display of technical prowess. Carwin had either checked out mentally or simply couldn't summon the energy to defend himself.

As a spectacle, it was amazing. Lesnar's display of fortitude will become a big part of his legend. But this fight still leaves tons of lingering questions about what kind of fighter Lesnar will become. He looked helpless against Carwin, scared and desperate. His standup game is still rudimentary. He got tagged with everything and landed almost nothing. If he gets hit by Cain Velasquez, one thing is for certain. We know Cain won't falter, will never quit that prematurely. This is a winnable fight for Cain Velasquez and one I'm looking forward to very much.
I know people will think I am hating but I am really not. I just call them how I see them and last weekend's fight was not that great. It tested Lesnar which we all needed to see, but I think it was his worst fight by far. I am sure that Cain is now licking his chops for the title shot

It's one thing to have a bad round, it is another thing to completely have you butt handed to you when you call yourself the best in the world. Look at how many people jumped on Fedor for losing 1 time in 10 years!!

All this hype about Brock being 60% before he got sick and he is 100% now talked him up to being some super human or something. IMO, he looked better when he was at 60% if that was the case.

But he did show that he is no joke and no body is taking anything away from him. Fighters are entitled to bad fights, but if you make the claim about being the baddest, then you need to back it up. The only top guy he has fought so far is Carwin. Mir was not top 10, IMO. Heath is a gatekeeper and Randy is a 205er. Now he will start getting top competition and will really get tested.

And like I said evreyone is human and could have 1 bad round which he recovered from and wasnt even breathing heavy at all.See by this statement dude it seems nothing is good enough. If and when he beats cain the media will come out and bash cain but then if brock has 1 bad round say in the 3rd this time will you say this again.Does it matter what round you have a bad round or not. And brock did back it up by coming back from that beating and winning the fight or tell me is that not backing it up

I would have to agree with that whole write up. There were times when brock was literally just running away from Carwin in the first round with his arm up clinging to the fence like "what the hell s going on, I didnt sign up for this." But i guess Its all irrelevant cause Carwin couldn't quite finish and Brock did. The thing I though was most impressive however was how Carwin just tossed Brock aside during Brocks first takedown attempt and forced him to stand up with him. It will be very interesting to see if Cain can manage to keep Brock standing since he will be giving up so much weight.

That is true, everyone can have a bad round. Not breathing heavy doesn't mean you didn't get your butt handed to you in the first. What do you mean nothing is good enough? Fighters have bad rounds all of the time...champs have bad rounds. It is nothing against Brock at all. But when you don't look good, you don't look good. It doesn't matter if it's one round or 5. The fight only went a round and a half, so the only thing we can judge is what we saw. What we saw was Brock had a bad fight that he ended up winning.

And IMO, Brock won the fight because Carwin lost it....not because Brock took it from him. Carwin let himself down in this one. He had the fight won and he just got too carried away. It's like the Fedor fight, Fedor should have let Werdum get up and them fight would have been over. Had Carwin allowed Brock to stand back up, another big shot and Brock would have been done....that is just my opinion.

I am not bashing Brock. I am just being analytical. If anything, this fight made me like Brock more because he pulled a win out when he was being smashed. That showed heart. He wasn't an idiot with his interview, he was humble...that is the biggest issue I have had with him this entire time.

I thought this was about Brock and Carwin....not Chuck and Rich??? But I will comment.

Chuck has said HIMSELF, that he can't take shots like he used to. Chuck was not completely dominating Rich like Carwin was dominating Brock....not to mention that Chuck hasn't been Chuck now for a while. Carwin was on a 12 fight win streak. These two fights have no similarities at all. Chuck and Rich had no other issues other than Chuck was fighting the way he always has and Rich KO'd him. Yeah, he ran in on him and probably could have backed off (but that is Chuck's style). I don't care what anyone says, Chuck has fought the exact same way from day 1....but now that he is losing, it's a mind problem. It's called getting figured out! If you are in the sport long enough and don't evolve, you get figured out. If you fight the exact same way every fight, you get figured out. Brock does not normally fight in a curled up position on his back taking shots. He is usually the one dominating. HUGE difference in the 2 fights.

If I was bashing Brock, I would be saying that he is a douche and I can't stand him and he sucks, blah blah blah. I am just stating the obvious. He had a bad fight. He didn't like getting hit. He was being dominated. Carwin's cardio ran out. Carwin gave up in the second. That's was Carwin's fight to win and he didn't finish. He lost it. What's wrong with that? There is nothing bad about Brock being said. The only negative thing I said was that he better work on his standup because if he fights Cain with the same standup he did saturday night, then Cain will eat him up on the feet....that is pretty obivious as well. I don't see where I am wrong here?

Different fight... Cain doesnt have the size and strength to keep Lesnar on the ground.. Brock wins this fight with ease he will take him down at will and pound him until he goes to sleep

Honestly I think Brock is Waaaaay more impressive now than before this fight!

Before this nobody knew if Brock could "take a punch" ...or at least thats what everyone was saying.
Well after about a million freight-train loaded punches to the face he still choked Carwins ass out! Then he goes and jumps on the cage and starts punching himself in the chin lol and is smiling and laughing!!! Thats is one scary crazy monster LOL and Cain is SO SCREWED!!!

Well, he only caught a couple of good ones and he didn't like it. As far as him hitting his chin on the cage, it was hitting like BJ does...he was just tapping it. It will get tested again with Cain.

I don't find him any more impressive...but I do have more respect for him as a fighter now.

see you might seem to respect him as a fighter why is it because he's more humble or is it that he won that fight with a submission. You and others had him losing. You said if shane catches brock with a uppercut he will lose well he did and brock still won. You seem to think that he doesnt deserve the title or something with your answers in your posts. some posts there seems to be negativity on something about him.Its funny now you say shane was just tapping brock when shane himself said he was giving out a beating which he was and brock took it and still won. You and others never would of guessed brock would of won with a submission.. I think everyone is underestimating brock now. And lets just say no one likes getting hit and every fighter acts differently when getting hit.

wow not even with brock getting a submission huh a 280lb guy submitting someone with only a few fights under his belt.

Being himble now is a big part. Seeing him learn and now knowing that he has heart to win plays a role. I think he deserves the title because he has beaten who they tell him to beat. Do I think he has beaten a true top 10 guy? Mir was as close to top 10 as Brock has faced. No where in any of my posts did I say that Shane would win if he caught him with an uppercut. No where in any of my posts did I say that Shane was just tapping Brock. I don't think anyone is underestimating Brock at all....as a matter of fact, I said in one of the pre-fight posts that I could see the fight going either way. I am sure that no one "likes" getting hit. But some can take it and some can't. Look at Leben for example, that guy gets hit with freaking sledge hammers and just keeps moving forward and actually gets stronger. Brock will never react like that. Fighters will always react the same when they get hit. It's just part of their personality. I think that Brock will always react like that when he gets hit.

About the submission, I am really not that impressed. I mean it's cool to see that he is learning some BJJ and that he recognized the opportunity to lock it in, but let's face it....Carwin was not going to defend it no matter what.

I give Brock way more credit than you do with some of the fighters that you don't like
