Alright guys, don't bash on me too hard here. My wife is going to try and get back into working out and try to get in shape. What she has done in the past is worked out with a trainer friend at her house. I have invited her to come workout with me and I would modify my routine to fit her needs but she hasn't done that either. So based on her goals (which are pretty much inline with mine...(athletic, lean, and overall health) I suggested that Cross fit may be what she is looking for. And actually, the more I think about it, it may be what I'm looking for as well. I had thought about going the power lifting route, but after struggling with this knee injury all year, and talking with other power lifters about how injuries are just part of power lifting and something you just live with....that's not really a life I want to live. I also don't care anything about getting on stage and competing in body building. So I guess I am looking for something in the middle. I have gotten back into martial arts and it just seems like cross fit may give a little more functional strength as far as the arts go. I don't know yet...I'll just have to see how it all plays out.

So what are your opinions on this? Good idea? Dumb idea? Cross fit is not the way to go? From what I have read about Cross fit is it mainly comes down to the trainers. The ones that don't know what they are doing will get you hurt. But I think with my knowledge of lifting that I will know what to do and not to do as far as bad technique....you know?

I just know how hard it is for me to try and get in shape with my wife at home cooking and eating whatever she wants. So if we are both on the same page with getting in shape, it will be that much easier. And I am trying to figure something out that we can do together to help keep each other motivated and just spend more time together. Because, to be honest, between her school and work and my work, gym, and martial arts.....we just don't see each other as much as we used to. I am a big family man and love for us to do things together.

here is what i am going to say about cross fit man. ballastic movements while fatigued are very bad for your joints. using momentum while being fatigued is bad for your joints. can you get into great shape and conditioning while doing cross fit? absofreakinglutely. but is the damage you can possibly do to your joints worth it? i know to ladies from my gym that are fanatical with cross fit. both have had serious knee injuries already and neither can do a strict bodyweight pullup or dip. that tells me something right there. do they look fantastic? yep but they are both younger than i am and they say that their elbows shoulders and knees are trashed in less than 2 years. i say light to medium paced cardio along with smart weight training and a good diet and you are happy healthy and more geared toward longevity in the goals you are seeking

Well, that's been my thinking as well. I'm still trying to get her to go with me to the gym, but it's hard to sway her once her mind is made up. We will see..

      Thanks for the input though!!

      "Not good"

I see trainers and or members try this style of training, but these people are generally too young in training years to sustain a good workout.

I echo what gun has said. Bad news on the 4 rotators, bad news on anything that hinges, all ligaments in teh patella.....bodybuilding is a way of life let/s emrabce this my friends!!

I think it can be great if done correctly and its better than doing nothing and sitting on the couch.

I see a lot of bad form...a lot.
Rounded lower backs on cleans and dead lifts. Craptastic form on squats. They try to add too much to the routine.

This trainer should be kicked in the nuts. The only thing he will accomplish is injuring his customer.

Does a regular squat not hit the core enough?

As an athletic sport, its cool. Like any sport, you can get hurt. Crossfit can destroy someones back, shoulder joints, etc etc etc if they are not careful. I like the idea of cross training and I incorporate it all the time. Theres some awesome elements in crossfit. Love WOD in crossfit. Love the leg drive football sled. Love the sledge hammer. But doing snatches, cleans and deadlifts when your e dead ass tired is a recipe for disaster.
I see those kipping pullups they do and am thinking WTF? Strict pulllups are such an excellent exercise so why bastardize it?
I am not a big crossfit fan, but yes, it beats the hell out of doing nothing and also beats the hell out of workouts done in a smith machine(piece of junk) and leg press sled machines(also junk) and some of the other stupid machines in gyms that **** people up

I don't think it's a Fad but I do thinks it's not for me. I have been. Tried it and was really good. But I like to push weight, set goals without speed being a record. It's competitive and it's fun. But it's not something I could do every day. But if it gets you off the couch then that's great. But if you get hurt and your back on the couch then you wasted money and time. Be smart.

i have a buddy that has been doing it pretty hardcore for the past 2 years. he is in his late 30's and he loves it. he is probably in the best shape i have ever seen him in. he always tries to get me to go but crossfit is not my thing. i say if something motivates you, go for it. just be carefull and listen to what your body is telling you
