If you would have paid attention in the second grade you would have learned what goes up must come down. You would have also learned that the same man who said that, also stated that for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction (Third Law of Motion).

Now to make it even more idiotic, lets add: "somethings fall apart so others can come together." This is the same statement reworded to sound more cleaver than its already "not-so-cleaver" counterpart. Obviously some one wasn't paying attention in physics class or maybe they were but they were too stupid to understand. The second law of thermodynamics is an expression of the universal law of increasing entropy. In simple terms, it is an expression of the fact that over time, differences in temperature, pressure, and density tend to even out in a physical system that is isolated from the outside world. Entropy is a measure of how far along this evening-out process has progressed.The people that spout this off should walk up to the surviving victims of 9/11 and look them in the eye and say that. Even better go to Hiroshima, Japan and spout your "words of genius" off to the elders.

How ignorant do we need to be. How many times are people going to use this excuse when things go wrong in their life? Because that is exactly what it is, an excuse. I feel bad for the people who say this, because statements like this is an overly abused opiate. An opiate that numbs them from the reality that is to come after making a mess of not only their life's but the life's of people around them.

We can't confuse "action or reaction" with "reason". The two statements are as different as the physical and spiritual worlds. The physical can't explain the spritual. I am a Christian but that has nothing to do with the simple statement "all things happen for a reason." I happen to know a few atheists that say it as well. The point is one of mere stupidity. Of course, all things happen for a reason, its an obvious statement. Of course God created the physical realm therefore once again, duh, all things do happen for a reason. It's not rocket science.

Lastly do me a favor and look up the word reason. You might find this:
a rational motive for a belief or action; "the reason that war was declared"

I don't think I have ever heard someone say "everything happens for a reason", without destiny, the supernatural or god being implied. It is an irrational attempt at consoling someone's emotional pain. The same thing with "somethings fall apart so others can come together" that is basically like someone telling another "when god closes a door he opens a window".

When these statements are made with the suggestion of gods plan or destiny, I see it as arrogant and condescending but I think there are many things religious people do that are arrogant and condescending. I just try to remember that the motivation for these arrogant expressions are made out of a desire to console and help others in a time of pain.

If someone was saying these things without the suggestion of a higher power, they must be really ignorant or think they are talking to someone really ignorant.

You got it!!!! Thats exactly what I am saying. I just usually tell people that things happen in due time. Its the time line of things that gets screwed up in most peoples minds. The time we want something to happen in, is usually for the most part quicker then the time frame it actually does happen in.

Biology works the same way. If we want something to heal after hurting it. It is going to take time. For example, inflammation pathways are necessary evils that direct a biochemical orchestra into a tune that ultimately heals the wound (their are exceptions to this, such as negative feedback or autoimmune disorders). Medicine does not have a "quick-fix" and people must realize that we are the most efficient machine on earth; more efficient that any man made machine, and that type of complexity deserves respect.

My point with that is this: If we are going to pray for something we must understand that it happens during the right time and place, even if that time and place isn't convenient to our limited understanding and foresight. We can really only predict what is to come by what follows behind.

I'm sure there are some people out there who will try to justify or explain what happen, but the truth is there isn't an explanation or justification for some things. You just have to accept that it happened and move on.

Some people have to justify or explain things before they can accept it and move on. It's just like people want to place blame on every action. Well accidents do happen. There are times when it is no ones fault, but they feel someone must be to blame. There must be someone at fault, and someone must take responsibility for the action... these people again can't just accept what happen and move on. That is why our court system is so overwhelmed with so many frivolous law suits... another total rant.

I'm with you on the over use/abused phrase "things happen for a reason". At one time it meant something, but it's been over used now and lost it's meaning.

I totally agree. I too am a christian, but there is no way that everything that happens, happens for a reason (the implication being, for the good of God or the victim). What about the massacre of the Jews by ******?
Some things happen just because the enemy wants to destroy God's creation.
It may be true that God can turn some things around so they benefit instead of hurt (like Joseph being sold by his brothers into slavery), but that doesn't mean that everything is part of God's great plan. Sometimes he just requires us to wallow in the muck we created.


BUT, I wish that everyone who has uttered the lines that everything happens for a reason or for every door that closes God opens a window, would realize that those words are not comforting unless they come true at the time the person is hurting. Otherwise, those words only ADD to their TORMENT.

It's okay to acknowledge that someone is in pain or just to be silent because you don't know what to say.
Just quit tormenting the poor victim with your clever, but meaningless, empty words.
