TweetTrust and honesty.
How do you find that? Well, good luck. Unless you have any referals and/or contacts with a BBB, then unfortunately you don't have much to go on. But if you can get in contact with some referals, then you have a little more to go off of.
Good luck bro...Shiner

TweetHmm...good question. I look at their work first. Get them to show you work that they did for others, if they can't come up with that i don't even get in depth about anything else and move on. Also, can they answer your questions and get an idea of what your after, or do they just say they can do whatever just to get the job? While talking to them i also look for eye contact when asking them questions, and also body language. Then when i decide to give the company the job, i have several other prices and see how close i can come to getting them to the lowest price. Customer sevice is also key. From the time im talking to the receptionist on the phone to the time iam ready to choose, iam analyzing their every action. If i feel im being blown off or they are not prompt, i move on. After i hire, if i see someone doing something on the job i don't like, i don't have a prob stopping all work to either get the situation taken care of or get me another worker who can do the job right. I tell the potential company that right off the bat. Its my $, and iam hiring them to do a job for me, not visa versa. Also, something i learned long ago...Never ever pay someone by the hr, pay by the job. Im not paying for some dip **** to stand around on my time. If i pay them by the job, they can stand around all they want, but their not getting paid till the jobs done.
TweetThanks guys! I'm just trying to get info for my own business. I wanted to get a consumers point on what they look for when hiring a company to do work. That helped a lot. Thanks. I'll rep ya both for that.
Anyone else that can give me their input also I'll rep you too. Thanks..
Tweetyou hire someone when you can't or don't want to do the project yourself. use a referal from a friends, word of mout is cheap and great advertiseing.
TweetYes but what I meant was what is it that makes you pick a company to do work for you. Is it Name recognition, price, advertising, coupons, the attitude of the rep, Do you prefer smaller companies or corporate conglomerates, or is it the presentation? Which of those play most importance when picking out someone to do work for you?Originally Posted by MeatHead
TweetI don't own a house but when I need something on my car fixed that I can't do myself, I look for 3 things; referrals, price and how quickly they can get the job done.
TweetI've got 4 responses! Come on slackers I know there's more of you out there than that! Help a brother out!
TweetREFERENCES...WHAT HAVE THEY WORKED ON IN THE PAST IS A BIG ONE
TweetWORD OF MOUTH MOSTLY. BUT, WHEN I GOT MY HOUSED RE-CARPETED, I COULDNT FIND ANYONE TO GIVE ME A DECENT REFERAL. I BUMPED INTO A GUY HANDING OUT FLIERS AT A SAMS CLUB PARKING LOT. HE WAS A GOOD SALESMAN, AND GOT AN APPOINTMENT OUT OF US, GAVE US A BID AND GOT IT DONE THE FOLLWING DAY!!! EXCELLENT SERVICE, AND I HAVE RECOMENDED THEM TO MANY. IT DOES HAPPEN TO BE A BIG COMPANY, BUT DEALING WITH THE REP, WAS LIKE WORKING WITH THE OWNER...

I LOVE BOOBOOKITTY...
TweetReferals! I will only use people that are referred from people I highly trust. Since I'm in the Real Estate industry I have a lot of contacts. But, they are ALL referrals from people I trust. People I do business with know not to refer someone they wouldn't have in there house. It goes both ways, if I meet someone who's talking about needing a Realtor or a Mortgage compnay but they are a real jackass, I will not refer them to my clients. I only refer 'good' people to my clients and then do the same.Originally Posted by DJDIGGLER
So, I'd find some people you trust and ask them for referances. Then, I'd have each one come and give you a bid. Also, I'd ask them for references if it's a big job. For instance, if you are going to have an addition put on your house then I suggest you get a referral from the architect who designs the addition for you. I guarantee that guy will put you in good hands.
More times than not you get what you pay for in the construction business. There are very few people who will do the best work for the lowest price. Also, this is your home, your largest single investment, pay the extra money to have the best people do the job. IMO
