Referals! I will only use people that are referred from people I highly trust. Since I'm in the Real Estate industry I have a lot of contacts. But, they are ALL referrals from people I trust. People I do business with know not to refer someone they wouldn't have in there house. It goes both ways, if I meet someone who's talking about needing a Realtor or a Mortgage compnay but they are a real jackass, I will not refer them to my clients. I only refer 'good' people to my clients and then do the same.
So, I'd find some people you trust and ask them for referances. Then, I'd have each one come and give you a bid. Also, I'd ask them for references if it's a big job. For instance, if you are going to have an addition put on your house then I suggest you get a referral from the architect who designs the addition for you. I guarantee that guy will put you in good hands.
More times than not you get what you pay for in the construction business. There are very few people who will do the best work for the lowest price. Also, this is your home, your largest single investment, pay the extra money to have the best people do the job. IMO
