I'd like to ask all of you to contact your congressmen, reps, etc... in deffense of the following.

Congress is proposing a $700 million cut to Medicare funding for FY 2008. This would jeopardize current and future care needs of America's most vulnerable population of frail elderly. This is on the heels of the 1997 Balanced Budget Act, which our lobyists have been trying to get fixed for the past 10 years. Since the BBA was passed, approximately 15% of skilled nursing providers have filed bankrupcy.
The Medicare program has been propping up inadequate reimbursement from Medicaid which is responsible for funding the care of 2/3 of nursing home patients and which underfunded nursing home care by$4.5 billion in 2006.
Even the Federal Reserve Board Chairman, Ben Bernanke recently testified on Capitol Hill and said that Congress must budget for the rising costs of retirement and medical benefits or face a fixcal crisis in coming decades.

Thank all of you in advance for your help

here's a news flash. its all about money. the government is going to continue to lean on privately owned--for profit and not for profits--until they go out of business and the whole thing is one big govt mess. you'll end up having to file a 1040 form to get a flu shot.

No news here man, I've been dealin with this crap for years. Several years ago we thought we were gonna have to close our doors along with 100
's of other nursing homes in Ga. when our Gov. proposed a major cut to medicaid. We launched a major fax/email/phone campaign and he decided to not do it. Guess he couldn't figure out where in the hell he was gonna place all thos folks, lol!

To be honest, why do I care about the elderly? Should I pay in so they can live comfortably, and I suffer in the next 30 years when I go to retire? No, I'm not saying this to start trouble, this is how I feel.
The elderly had their whole life to save up. They paid $30,000 for a house that's worth $230,000 today. College degrees weren't required to get good jobs. A salary was $15,000 a year, and new car was $5000. You want to stop the "Frail Elderly" from collapsing? Close every Casino in the country. Probably 70% of all casino visitors are senior citizens. I can't feel bad for someone who had their whole lives to build and mold their own future, and now are sitting back looking for handouts. Social Security won't be around when I go to retire. Why should I try to protect the seniors money now? Maybe, we can all get some good deals on houses if they all do reverse mortgages (now that last line was a joke)

So you're into giving handouts? It's not about your parents thanking me. Again, I'm not looking to start like so many expect me to do. This is really how I feel.
So you feel we should pay in all this money to Social Security every week, and you should contribute your hard earned money that you earned, so the seniors to live today? Money that YOU can control by putting into an IRA, or a mutual fund, or something that will benefit you. Again, if you are a senior who purchased a home in the 1970's, your home has more than likely increased a minimum of 800%. So why not do a reverse mortgage? Why do you see seniors by the busloads going to Atlantic City casinos every weekend? There are financial opportunities for the elderly. The only thing I can see being changed in the health care system, is us kids should be allowed to cover our parents under our health care at work. I would have no problem paying an extra $100 a month for my parents. That's the least I could do for them.

i didnt take it that you were starting...and i was just jackin ya with the parents thanking you thing, but...you actually feel that most elderly have owned their homes for 30 yrs?? my parents have baught and sold 5 houses since the one i grew up in. most elderly do. they just baught their house in aug. 2001. now, the market is crushed here and they are tanked...good thing they both still work! i dont know ANY elderly that live in the home they raised there kids in. i know there is such people, but i tend to think more have moved on, so that whole "use your paid off, 30yr old home for living" program isnt a reality for many! my parents dont do casino's either....i know a banker that's homosexual...that dont mean they are all fags, right? cost of living has past alot of elderly's income...i dont agree that we should just push them out of our way...some dont have kids to help them. alot of the kids are struggling themselves...i just dont agree with the throw them to the wolves mentality that you display.

do i want to controll my own money...well, yes if they (politicians) are gonna continue to miss use it. but i realize it would have to be a program inwitch the current one would be phased out.

AOM, what about the one's who worked their entire lives, got sick spent a life's savings puttin ungrateful kids through college as well as their own med expences only to wind up penniless? How about the ones on disabilaty, etc.....? I can only speak of the ones that I've dealt with here. Yes, many of them were deadbeats, blew money on booze and drugs and that's why they are in need of Medicaid. We also have many others who just worked factory type jobs, etc... their entire lives and weren't educated in finance yet tried the best they could and now are in need of help? Are you honestly suggesting that we simply allow these people to go without medical care? Look, I'm all for "your reap what you sow" but I absolutely could not sit by and watch the medically needy simply go without any type of care.

I understand what you're saying. And I do possibly have a small amount of compassion somewhere for those that truely are in a bind by no fault of their own. But the problem is, what constitutes a "bind by no fault of their own"? Putting ungrateful kids through college? Why are the kids ungrateful? Bad parenting? Yes, uneducated elderly, believe it or not, I can understand. Many seniors signed up for the military when they wer 16 and 17 years old, skipping education to defend our country. I'm cool and compassionate with that. So then there's a problem with the system. Automatically, you're a veteran, you get different benefits than the regular man does.
I don't agree with sending $500,000,000 to foreign countries, when our veterans at home are suffering from Post traumatic stress disorders and mental disabilities. But to say "Let's support the elderly because they had it tough." We have it tougher! Not many people I know can afford $300,000 houses, with 2 kids, medical benefits, life insurance premiums, 401k withdrawls out of their pay each week, etc..... But, the new generation is palnning for our future retirement. Something granny and grandpa should have been doing 50 years ago!!

I get what you're sayin but what do you suggest happens to these folks? Most of the time their families simply cannot afford to provide home health care for them so what options are there?
I feel the same way with the obese poplulation. This group is the fastest growing (no pun intended, lol!) group coming into nursing homes. What this means for me is a ****load of money bein spent on wide wheelchairs, berryatric beds, widened doorways, etc..... As much as I hate it and feel that they are just plain selfish and inconsiderate of what they put others through, it's my job to make sure they're taken care of. I'd love to tell em ***** off, you're too expensive and you did this to yourself" but like I said, it's my place in this world to take them in and provide care.

      AOM,

a society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable. Frail elderly, the mentally retarded, and young children and babies among others fall into this category. How do you feel about the mentally retarded and babies? Should the frail elderly be euthanized? Lets just pick an age that one typically becomes a dependent on the system--say 65. Everybody can just line up on their 65th birthday. How's that sound? That would allow you to look forward to lots of money in the future. comments like yours make me sick. Its all about you, isnt it? Should babies that have been determined to have birth defects be aborted? Lets just mandate this into law...it would save ALOT of money because all those little kids NEVER pay into the system and man, all those kids really suck up the medicaid money, ya know.

A child never asked to be brought into this world. Nor can a child care for themselves. A mentally retarded child never asked to be retarded. You're going out on a very large limb and a stretch here to compare retarded people, children, and elderly.
I guess no one here listens to Anthony Robbins? You are where you are in life because YOU put yourself there. You have no one else to blame in life if you're at a bad point. Sure, it's easy to blame the Government and George Bush because of the failing economy and gas prices, and I can't catch a break because of the social security system.......wah wah wah. The elderly had 60+ years to save for the future. Plan a pension. Plan a 401k. Pay $20,000 for your 4BR 2bath home. I'm sorry, but no one is going to make me change my mind. And I'm sorry if my comments make you "sick" PL. I know this isn't the first time my comments made you sick. But do gooders like you who want to give hand outs to everyone will be the downfall of our economy. You want to make a difference? Rally to close the casinos. Stop the state lotteries. It seems gamblin is the downfalls to the economies of people over 60. Sure, the state lottery benefits senior citizens. Ironically, they probably contribute 80% of the funds to the state lottery! Instead of the elderly looking for get quick rich schemes like the lottery and casinos, how about they put that money away each month for medicare.
