  • Traps Flared Side Lateral Raises

A ton of exercises work the upper, mid, and lower traps. But this exercise is new to me. I tried it out and even with 15's & 20's I def felt it in the upper trap area. If you are not sure what this exercise is a google search will tell/show you. I am always looking to make every muscle freakish large and if this exercise will help make my mountains even larger I am going to do it. But, as with any new lift, certain factors need to be considered of course.

So, is it a safe exercise or is it a lift that is asking for injury? Does anyone do this exercise regularly and get good results in their freakish bodybuilding traps appearance? Any other input to get a discussion about this one lift going ...

personally I'd avoid it, too much stress on the nerves of the neck, to each his own though

Sounds like you have tried it. The neck pressure is what got me thinking about the safety part of the lift. And I'm one of those wackos that has the neck harness and attach 45's to a chain and reverse head bang. My baby mama swears its the reason I have such bad sleep apnea. I tell her its bc im trying to stay alive, shes sucking the life out of me. (jokingly of course. That line is actually from Sinbad's last stand up special which was surprisingly really funny.)

This is a written description I copied and pasted and below that is the only video I could find. The guy is def not the freakish look I am always trying to excel at but the lift itself caught my interest which is why I tried it and I am bringing it up now.

"Lateral Raises, with Traps Flared: This one is tough. First, you need to flare your traps while holding the dumbbells. Next, simply perform a lateral raise. This is just like a normal lateral raise where you lock your elbows and lift the dumbbells directly out to your side to where they are parallel with he ground. The lateral raise usually hits your deltoids, but when you flare your traps it concentrates the movement to them for maximum isolation. Start with 12 to 15 reps and don't use too much weight so that you will maintain proper form and get used to the movement."

Ive done this while lying on an incline bench backwards and have had no problems with it as far as injury and definitely feel it dfierently than standing straight up.

Any change in angel on a particular exercise is good.Hits the muscles from a different angel which will stress them more which in turn will recruit more muscle fibers to perform it.

As always, the key to any exercise is perfom it with correct form and with the porper weight so not to have to throw the weight around. This one especially should be done with a lighter weight and proper form and progress in weight slowly as needed.

Sound like your describing a Prone Side Lateral Raise which would be Bent Over Side Lateral Raise with the assistance of the Incline to stay strict and mix it up. The "Flaring" of the traps is what makes the lift different than any Side Lateral Raise. You really gotta focus to push the traps forward to "Flare" them then you feel it all in your upper rear traps and whatever you would normally feel in the Lateral Delt is practically non existent.

That exactly whatcI was describing. As for the "flaring" of the traps im not sure how this would work because ive not tried it as this is supposed to be done but hey as ive said, try it out and if it works well for you, then stick to it.

If you try it out,ost up with how it goes.

Re: Traps Flared Side Lateral Raises

I did describe it, in the OP . The feeling is most certainly different but as was mentioned by 6p6 there seems to be added stress on the neck and I have to agree that I felt some pressure on the neck. So I wanted to know if that's okay and comes with the territory so to speak when large traps are pushing against each other like that or if im asking for it ya know. And of course if flaring is effective and safe.

I'm going to keep digging. It really made the traps sore in a good kinda way but if its going to lead to neck injury then its no good.

I forgot to add if anyone else has experience with the "Flare" post up if you can. Today I tried standing but bc of the nature of the "Flare" I ended up at an angle to get the Traps nice and tight. FIST brought up trying them Prone. See how it goes.

I cant find the edit button but I meant FIST planted the idea in me to try them Prone. He did not specifically say "DK try em prone dude" lol. OK 4 posts in a row in one thread. Once more and Im a nuisance.

I'm very cautious with my neck...I was blessed with natural trap size so dead lifts or LIGHT stretch style shrugs work just fine for me...99% of guys perform shrugs wrong...it almost makes me laugh watching guys stacking 45's working every body part while moving the weight less than an inch and calling it a shrug...

...the other day some punk was kind of eye f'n me and he was doing this ^^^ so I asked him how his calve raises were going...his friends started laughing at him...
