this is bad advise...one of the quickest ways to blow up a gasoline engine is from starting fluid...it is made for diesel engines, not gasoline....never spray ether in any engine unless you know what you are doing, and never spray in gasoline engine....ive seen it bend every push rod in the head from just small squirts...could be lots of things wrong....rule out the battery...if you had jumpers on it, there was plenty of voltage there...timing???maybe a timing chain/belt..pull the distributor cap(if it has a distr, and see if the rotor turns while cranking...if not the chain or belt is broke...could be a sensor/solenoid of some type...

Well there are a couple of ways
1- when you turned it off and it backfired timing could have jumped a tooth if it has high miles
2- most have cam sensors now and the sensor could have just gone out.

ok...didnt backfire when turned off. backfired AFTER trying to start it for over 20mins WITHOUT jumper cables. backfired when using starting fluid. ran perfect for hundreds of miles from chicago to northen detroit area (5hr drive) turned off like normal....now...maybe a sensor went out, i dont know. there is spark from the distributer, if that means anything.

I've been working on equipment and cars my whole life and I've used and seen starting fluid used on gas engines many many times with no troubles.
Diesel engines have valves in them to but they are immune some how?

ummm yeah they are.if someone who knows what they are doing uses it..first there is no spark in a deisel engine...second, have you ever seen a piston or a head off a diesel engine compared to a gasoline??everything is way heavier duty, and the physics of how a diesel works makes it less prone to damage from itSpray too much in a diesel and they will fluid lock...because there is no spark....load up a gasoline engine and BOOM!as soon as the spark plug fires...im not going to argue with you...yes you can use it on a gasoline engine...will any engine manufacturer or mechanic advise it...NO! I too have been a grease monkey my whole life, and have seen ether damage both kinds of engines

starter was working fine until it went "ZIIIIIING" and now it dont work at all...just makes zingy noise.

You could have burned up the starter. The battery obviously was not the problem if it was turning over for all that time, and jumper cables wouldn't even be necessary. Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Fuel pump would be something worth checking.

The engine isn't frozen or it wouldn't turn over once. It wouldn't do anything.
If it's getting fuel, spark, and won't start with starting fluid. that's a head-scratcher. I would just start with process of elimination. plugs & plug wires 1st, etc...
Actually, I would say, "case & point." and go get an F-150. Never have that problem again. but that's me and my blood runs blue. and orange. blue oval.

I see this has been around for a couple weeks. I only read the topic. Hope you got it solved. And I can't believe you haven't got through to the kid about chevrolet.

ah. I was coming back to suggest ignition.
I was thinking injectors, but not all injectors would go completely bad at once to not even fire. It would just run rough.
