I saw where Kerry was blasting Bush's "extreme right wing ideology" on stem cell research. What are some of you guy's views?

I believe tha man should not play God and try to create life. However, I do differ from my conservative counterparts in I believe that if science could clone healthy organs for rare blood types AND the scientists give the the glory of this ability to God and not themselves then I think it would benefit mankind.

God gave us a very powerful brain to use. But we have to remember to give him credit for our accomplishments. Too often we pat ourselves on the back when we did nothing more than use what he gave us.

      Just my 2 cents.

Bioethics can be pretty tricky. In my opinion you cannot use a wrong to justify a right and when we start getting confused with all of the debating back and forth, we have to look at the bare bones and ask what is the source. Unfortunately we live in a world that believes that the ends justify the means. This may work for a quick fix but long term, it ends up doing much more harm than good. The human embryo should be treated as a person from time of conception forward. It shouldn't be destroyed or viewed as disposable tissue for research or generated specifically for research. To quote one of my favorite philosophers "Experience is already showing how a tragic coarsening of consciences accompanies the assault on innocent human life in the womb, leading to accomodation and acquiescence in teh face of other related evils such as euthanasia, infanticide and more recently, proposals for the creation for research purposes of human embryos, destined to be destroyed in the process." and "We are masters not products of technology." The human embryo should be accepted as a full human person from the moment of conception and therefore, having an intrinsic dignity and value that cannot be compromised in the name of other values. We should pursue advances in health and science but at the same time, we cannot disregard the value and dignity of human life.

i agree with ya. the idea of cloning an entire human is just plain scary if you ask me. religous beliefs aside, it just gives me a uneasy feeling lol. but as for cloning healthy organs i think thats a huge step in the medical field. and i think its very foolish to turn our backs on something this big and life changing.

KERRY’S STEM CELL POLICY LACKS COHERENCE

Senator John Kerry criticized President George W. Bush yesterday on the subject of embryonic stem cell research. He said the president was “turning his back on science in favor of ideology,” and that his position was emblematic of how he “makes decisions” and how he “sees the world.”

Catholic League president William Donohue addressed Kerry’s remarks as follows:

“Senator Kerry is correct to say that President Bush’s decision to put limits on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research tells us something about the way he makes decisions and sees the world. It also tells us something about those who want no restrictions whatsoever. This is what Kerry said yesterday: ‘I will stop at nothing to get stem cell research moving in this country.’ Which means there are no ethical concerns that give this man pause about destroying human embryos. This tells us volumes about the way he sees the world, beginning with nascent human life.

“Kerry says that to put limits on embryonic stem cell research is to ‘sacrifice science for extreme, right-wing ideology.’ But Kerry knows full well that right-wing ideology has no more to do with this issue than left-wing ideology—the issue is one of biology, pure and simple. Either one believes that life begins at conception, or one does not. If life begins at conception—and the scientific evidence is overwhelming that it does—then there is only one defensible moral position to take: embryos must be protected. And since embryonic stem cell research cannot take place without destroying embryos, logic dictates that we should pursue adult stem cell research and not toy with embryos.

“Kerry has boxed himself in. On the one hand, he says he is a ‘practicing and believing Catholic’ who believes that ‘life begins at conception.’ But on the other hand, he says he will stop at nothing to allow the killing of human embryos for the purpose of research. This is not just another flip-flop—it’s a morally incoherent position about the most salient of issues.”

An embryo is a human life. Destroying that embryo for the purpose, or for any purpose, is essentially murder. End of discussion.

If there was a way to reproduce a human organ without using an embryo, that would be a technological advance that would save a lot of needless suffering while waiting for an organ transplant. Stem cell research IMO is unethical.

Have you seen that models and very attractive women are selling their embryos so ppl wanting children will be guarnteed an above average child. Ive seen advertisements for up to 100k, and that doesn't gurantee if it takes. You can get a blue eyed blonde if you want, or dark hair brown eyes, athletic body type perfect face etc.

Ok, I'm ignorant in this topic. I did not realize they had to destroy the embryo to clone organs. As a result, I change my first comment. No way would I say destroy one life to clone an organ. I absolutely agree that life begins at conception. It would be a real advancement of science if they could clone organs without destroying embryos.

mick-G - That's just plain crazy! You know how many unattractive people have beautiful kids and visa versa? I know unattractive people with very attractive parents. I know families with multiple kids and the same parents may make only one beautiful or athletic kid out of 4. People are desperate and it's sad.

These are ppl that cant have kids of their own and need artificial insemination. I have seen advertisements with womens profiles and the amout of money they want for their embryos. Some ppl that can't have children the conventional way have the bucks and i guess theres a market for it. They are not guarnteeing if it will take or if the outcome will be guarnteed, but desperate ppl that are picky and have the $ what to try and ensure that they will have the most beautiful child with the color eyes hair they want if they are paying for it.

yes, guys, they wait to a certain point after conception, when the embryo divides a certain number of times, then destroy it to "harvest" the stem cells. Think about the little baby that would have resulted from that embryo had it not been "harvested" the next time John Kerry cheers on "our brilliant scientists" and scolds the "extreme right wingers and Bible thumpers" for "holding back medical science".

Sorry, stem research will not change my vote, lol. I don't think the embryo is conceived in the womb it is harvested outside. I really don't agree with it, but look at all the animals that are killed and tortured for research. Nobody cares about that.

Yes, I believe the embryo is created outside the womb. That is not the issue, IMO.

Also, I would never compare an infant life that is taken to one of a lab rat or gerbil that is used for medical research, but thats just me.
