Seems cool and all, but I still would go with krava maga or akido
If your going to fight multiple attackers in a real life situation those are the arts to go for. But muy thai is pretty cool too

Baguazhang (BAH-GWA-ZHON) is a chinese martial art that was invented to take on multiple fighters at one time. Bagua meaning 8 Trigrams Palm is the mother art to Akido.

No Such Animal, Muai Thai with no ground training will get you hurt. BJJ with no standup will get you ktfo.

      Learn Muai Thai - Standup
Greco Roman for clinch and Throws
BJJ for Ground control and finishes.

What you got is MMA - Mixed Martial Arts

I agree with some of those above, learn a stand up and a grappling.
I've trained BJJ for about a year now and have recently been getting into Muay Thai. A BJJ class focused more on self defense should have some standup involved, if its strickly sport BJJ then probably wont do much more than take downs then the rest on the ground.
I do think that a grappling art is almost a must, first thing that comes to mind...the beginning of UFC and the migration towards grappling, if that doesn't show how useful it is I don't know what will. From a personal stand point, I had a friend get out of hand after a long day of drinking and a going away party for the marines. Problems started and the things I was taught in BJJ proved to work and I was able to control the situation various ways without striking him or hurting him other then temperary pain. He left the next day for boot camp and now the Marines can teach him something if he screws up while he's gone. If you ever have to control a friend or a family member or someone you have no intentions of hurting or making things worse then Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be very useful, knowing only a stiking art such a Muay Thai will not win over too many people when you decide to elbow someone such as a friend or family member.

Also, if your going to get in a fight and you know there are more of them, good idea would be to avoid the entire thing. I agree that you never know when someone else will jump in, but a lot of times you can see those who may before anything happens.

My college actually had a minor in martial arts, through the PE department. Since i was already into Tae Kwon Do, and the classes were actually worth 3 credits, i took a few.

Basically the gist I got out of it was the most effective style of Martial arts is Americanized Karate.... which is basically a mixing of the most usefull techniques from all the arts..... It is basically what Bruce Lee was doing with his Jeet Kun do.....

I know a korean guy that took Wing Tsun and he said it wasn't too practical for real life situations, then again it could be the teacher and/or the student, who knows.

Too old? Shit, your never too old. What happens when you have to reload, what happens when you get the death penalty for being a "gun freak gone nuts." Any gun enthusiast should know by now that if you dont find alternative methods, your going to get fucked by the system. Texas at least is alot more friendly towards that but I live in California, so guns are truly a last resort especially for a male.

You cant shoot anyone outside your home even if they have a gun. Once inside the house if they dont shoot first, your asking for trouble. You must prove beyond reasonable doubt that your life was in danger and this is alot more difficult for a man than a woman, hence the only sure fire way to get away with it is to be half dead yourself, its alot of BS and frankly there are other ways. Plus its another way to stay limber and in shape, and I have always valued that.
My main point is that I don't want to ever have to fight again. I'm 50, and many years ago i was a night club bouncer, dealt dope, did"collections" for bookies and other drug ******s besides myself. I have seen more than my share of brutality. I am also well familiar with the laws. fortunately for me, I'm 6'2" 250, and no one messes with me. doesn't matter. I would only whip out the shot gun to protect the very life of myself or someone I love. There is no other excuse for violence.
There is no substitute for experience......

Some of you guys are spot on.

MMA competitors today have evolved way past being one dimensional fighters and are now very good in multiple styles.

For instance, the Brazilian Top Team, which is full of traditional BJJ guys, now cross trains with an American wrestling coach and a renowned Muay Thai coach.

For the average guy in the street, a mix of Muay Thai and BJJ would be ideal, or even western boxing.
