As far as what to do, I guess it depends on how old you are and what you're into.
If drinking and socializing is your game, there are plenty more bars/clubs than you'll even realize in any website etc.
The Quarter is good during the day for tourists who actually want to see it and the crowd is more respectable than in the late evenings. Evenings are mainly for drinking and cutting up, but as I said, there are many places ("local" clubs) in the area of the Quarter for that besides Bourbon St. itself.
The problem is, I suck with street names, so I would have a hard time directing you in specific terms
The daytime is good for touring places to eat.
You could also travel up St. Charles Ave. from one end to another for more eating/drinking.
Also, Metairie is a nice middle/upperclass city right next door to N.O. which is where I live.......in case you want to venture out a tiny bit further for either more shopping or eating or drinking etc.
Just don't plan on traveling east of the French Quarter.
There's also plenty of shopping (for toruists and locals - regular mall stores too) and eating at the Riverwalk.....that's right on the River (right near the GNO Bridge) where the Carnival cruise ships dock........nice place if you want a break from Bourbon St.
There's the Aquarium and Riverboat trips you can see/do also (between the Riverwalk and the Quarter).
Ponchartrain Blvd. will take you out to see Lake Ponchartrain.....nice scenic road out there for seeing the Lake and just enjoying a pretty afternoon...oh, and for more eating too In fact, in that area you will find a couple more popular drinking/socilizing spots - good area for Sunday night (and other nights) drinking right ON the Lake <------ not far from the Quarter either. In fact everything I've mentioned so far is like 5-15 minutes from the Quarter.
Check into it and zoom in on some maps of the area.....once you locate Lake Ponchartrain and French Quarter you can put it all into geographical perspective.
Lake Ponchartrain is North
The River is South
Metairie is West.....(then city of Kenner)
NewOrleans is East
Basically, there's more than JUST Bourbon St. for eating/drinking/chilling out
Tweetlive in new orleans...put your wallet in your front pocket.
