TweetI have Hornaday Critical Defense in both my 9mms and my 1911 .45 apc. Not the best in terms of expansion but expands 100% of the time unlike some of the other brands that perform better 90% of the time. just like my pistol i want it to work 100% of the time whether i am forced to shoot through 5 layers of clothing or none. Many big names work great when shooting bare gel but throw the 4 layers of denim (fbi standard) over it and they fail to open and over penetrate.
Nosler has a very promising bullet, they make great stuff but have not seen enough on it
a lot of guys like the hornaday critical duty over critical defense. duty is a +P round. it tended to over penetrate and is made for cops to be able to shoot through concealment.
i do not use +p ammo as it is hard on the pistol and felt recoil is higher slowing follow up shots.
so, what are you using for self defense in you CC or home protection weapon? (feel free to post rifle or shotty ammo too)

TweetSame here I'm stocked up on the 40 cal
Tweetremember the old black talon rounds? the originals. those actually look the same as the hornaday except the hornaday has a poly tip to ensure opening through clothes. i think bullet tech has come very far. most premium ammo will do well
TweetI do remember. and I agree as well.
Tweeti know someone that has a ton of them bad boys for reloads wink wink in their mountain stock pile.
jipped you know your stuff very well my friend. give the nosler a go, they are very good and perform very well

Tweetanyone see those RIPS ammo. not even sure if its legal but boy I would totally pick it up If I could find it. it looks nuts on that youtube video
Tweetyeah. it looks great on paper. the problem is that all those little pieces that come off do not penetrate well. the center part penetrates well but it turns into a little .22 bullet after loosing the rest. there is a reason why bullets that keep all their mass are the most popular.
i am sure they are good. but i would have to be shown 100% they are better
Tweetranger t is one of the top self defense rounds available. Ranger t is 5th generation black talon.
I use ranger t, federal hst, gold dots, and corbon dpx in the pistols.
In my AR's its mk 262, trophy bonded bear claw, nosler bonded solid base, and gold dots/fusion.
shot guns get regular old buck shot or Brenekke slugs.
if anyone is interested in terminal balistics they should google doctor gary k roberts. He is known as the top expert in the field of terminal balistics, and got his start at the IWBA (the international wound ballistics association). He has compiled a list of service caliber loads that pass all fbi, and iwba protocol for pentration. This includes bare along with all barriers. If anyone is interested in the list I could post it. It is only for service calibers, 9mm, 40, 45, 556, 308.
TweetTbis is 100% accurate. RIP fails to penetrate deep enough to get to vital structures. Only the base of the bullet penetrates deep enough and usually over penetrates. Ideal pentration is no less than 12" and no more tban 18". For what you pay for tbe RIP bullets you can buy aot of high end self defense ammo that you can count on.
Tweetyep, I use critical defense by hornaday. great reliable expansion, perfect penetration and cycles reliably in my weapons.
TweetCor-Bon 165gr .45, I like the lighter grain too. That RIP ammo, aren't those the knarly looking saw blade lookin' things ?

TweetYes tbey are. You shoukd check out the 185s, the 165s are a little shirt on pentration. I would still have no problem using them, but I lime to error on the side of more pentration.
