      see,thats what i don't understand. when dieting or whatever people say to eat those as opposed to regular white potatoes....HOW?!?!? they have a lot of sugar in them. when i diet (on the rare occasion) i don't eat ANY sugar at all, let along 17g in one sweet potato. i'll stick to red skin or white potatoes. sweet potatos are gross.

      Thats awesome. I just saw that 17gs of sugar and was thinking the exact same thing.

      Although I think sweet potatoes with some splenda and cinnamon are awesome.

      its' because once the white potato gets in your system, it is more readily converted to simple sugar. this causes the level of sugar in your blood to be much higher when eating white potatoes vs. sweet potatoes. this is indicated by the GI of each:

      The white potato has a GI of 85 the sweet potato has a GI of 54. Also the sweet potato has a lot of betacarotene (neutralizes free radicals.)

      The lower the glycemic index the better for weight loss.

      it is also higher in fiber. fiber may help to lower cholesterol.

      if you want to gain weight (READ: FAT) then eat the white potatoes. if you want to get clean carbs and be in shape eat sweet potatoes.

      and crombie, those nutrition facts are based off 1oz, the ones you read were based off 1 cup.

      red skin potatoes are almost as good (GI of 62) as sweet potatoes in the weight loss category, but i don't think they have as much fiber and they definitely don't have betacarotene.

      i've tried out the sweet potato thing before, even loaded it with spray butter and cinnamon and just couldn't choke it down. i'll stick with red skin.

      I love sweet potatoes... especially the Okinawa/Hawaiian Sweet Potatoe (purple)! They aren't nearly as sweet like yams. If I can't get a hold of any Okinawain Sweet Potatoes then I'll purchase the regular sweet potatoes (white) - not YAMS (orange)! I hate those orange and overly sweet phucking things!
