A few recommendations
1. Find a new Chiropractor, Chiropractic works, I have seen this first hand. There are many techniques out there, Activator is a great one...
2. Lean towards ice. Ever see athletes applying heat on the sidelines? Ice is anti inflammatory, heat promotes inflammation. If the disc is herniated, you can bet there is inflammation.
3. Watch out for surgeons. Long term studies show increased complications, especially with fusions. Fusing a lower lumbar will effect SI joints and upper lumbars and cause further problems.
4. Be careful with compressive lifts (squats, deadlifts, heavy shoulder press, heavy shrugs etc.)
5. Don't sit for more than a few hours a day
6. Strengthen the core

well there's my two cents:-)
