  • Carlos Condit will remain the number one contender regardless of the outcome between Penn vs. Diaz on Saturday nigh

Many fans and experts have predicted that Saturday night’s main event winner, whether it be BJ Penn or Nick Diaz, would get the next shot at the welterweight strap that is currently held by the injured Georges St. Pierre. However, today UFC president Dana White made it clear that Carlos Condit will remain the number one contender regardless of the outcome between Penn vs. Diaz on Saturday night. White’s exact words were, “Condit’s in.”
UFC 137 has been a crazy shuffle filled with replacements, swaps, and injuries. Diaz was originally set to fight GSP on Saturday but was demoted when he missed a mandatory presser for the fight. He was then paired up with Penn while Penn’s original opponent in Carlos Condit was moved up to fight St. Pierre for the belt. Then St. Pierre injured his knee while training for UFC 137 and was forced to withdraw from the card. Condit immediately decided to sit out and wait for GSP to mend and return to the cage.
That’s when the talks of a new number one contender emerged. However, those rumors were squashed today by White who made it very clear that Condit is indeed the next contender to fight for the welterweight strap.
White also explained that St. Pierre’s injury doesn’t seem to be too extreme and projected the Champion’s return to come sometime in February with a “six to eight week” rehabilitation time-table. And waiting for him when he returns will be “The Natural Born Killer” Carlos Condit.
Still, even with Condit getting the next shot at GSP’s crown, Saturday night’s main event fight between Penn and Diaz will be one that has a heavy impact on the welterweight division. The winner will likely seat themselves at the top of the division with a title shot looming in the near distance. But regardless of all the implications that “might” come out of this fight I feel it is necessary to clear all of this talk out of the air so that we can enjoy Saturday night’s main event for what it is truly going to be: two former champions and legendary warriors of the sport doing battle in Las Vegas in front of a sold out crowd and millions watching from home. UFC 137 is now only three days away. Fight fans, it’s time to get excited!

Yeah, everyone was saying that with the fight postponed, this weekend's winner would bump Condit. I think this is the way it should be. It was Condit's fight first and should remain that way.

GSP getting hurt will actually help Condit's chances tremendously! Not having a game plan for GSP when he took the fight would have greatly reduced his chances. Now he has until Feb to work his game plan for GSP specifically. Not saying he will win, but his chances will be better.

As he should realistically. How much bigger is GSP than BJ? Even though it would be a dry hump session, I would still like to see them fight again.

Like BJ said, it's a wrestler's sport right now with the point system. Finishing fights should count for something....GSP very rarely finishes a fight

I mean, BJ is giving up close to 30lbs on GSP. To see a good comparison, have GSP move up and fight Anderson....that's basically what BJ is doing.

GSP finished BJ in a stoppage last fight and I would bet he would again. Plus, if GSP can realistically get down to 155 like you think he could than he isnt giving up 30 lbs to BJ. They are basically the same size really, its just GSP is all muscle and BJ is like 20% bf.

BJ's corner through the towel in between rounds. Technically a stoppage, but not a stoppage by MMA terms. Everyone knows GSP doesn't finish fights any more and fights VERY safe. I am a GSP fan and he gets pretty boring and is very predictable. But he is good.

No where near the same size. At 170, GSP fights at around 200lbs. BJ had to gain to get to 170. Big difference. GSP won't get to 155. That's a lot of talk to take the attention away from him not wanting to challenge Anderson, IMO. GSP at 155 would still weigh about 170-175 come fight night. BJ might weigh 165 or so. GSP has the weight cut down. He does it as good as anyone. BJ doesn't have that so there will still be a difference no matter if it's 155 or 170.

20% is a little exaggerated. I've never seen anyone at 20% have abs showing.

If you think that GSP and BJ are the same size.....then wouldn't everyone talk about how big BJ is for WW? Or how he would be a monster at LW? The reason I ask is because everyone talks about how GSP is a good size for MW which would make him a BIG 155'er and if BJ is the same size, then the same should apply to him.
