  • Report: Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz Slated for December in Montreal

According to MMAWeekly, it will no longer be “Business as usual” between the UFC and their little brothers. Although Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz inked a multi-year contract extension to remain with the San Jose, California based promotion in December, it appears he will be the next to challenge UFC king Georges St-Pierre for his crown.
The 170-pound title unification bout is expected to take place December 10th in GSP’s hometown of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Bell Centre will host the Octagon’s return up north.
When UFC Canada’s director of operations Tom Wright announced the event earlier this week, he also mentioned something he had heard through the grapevine.
“Well, I’ve heard about the Nick Diaz-GSP fight, but it is too early (to tell),” Wright said.
After St-Pierre successfully defended his belt against Jake Shields last month at UFC 129, company president Dana White touched on Zuffa, LLC’s first potential crossover fight, but suggested he didn’t want to interfere with existing contracts.
“I imagine I could do whatever I wanted to do if I really wanted to, but we have a contract with Showtime and [Diaz is] a Showtime fighter. I don’t know, we’re going to have to see how this whole thing works out. That’s an interesting fight,” White stated at post-fight presser.
Although December will mark roughly seven months between bouts, the timing sounds about right for St-Pierre. Canada’s golden boy has been competing only twice a year since 2008.
After putting Paul Daley down in thrilling scrap in April, Diaz expressed great displeasure in the lack of zeros in his paycheck. In search of greener pastures, he signed to face former IBF and IBO super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy in a boxing match this coming fall.
However, the controversial grappler reportedly met with White at the UFC’s corporate office in Las Vegas this past Wednesday to discuss his future.
According to the report, ‘GSP vs. Diaz’ could be announced as early as next week.

It won't be by GSP. Nick is tough to finish

There is a rumor now that Diaz and GSP will be coaches on the next Ultimate Fighter show

GSP was just a coach. Why not let Anderson ever do it? Diaz will prob be a prick on the show though and make it interesting I guess.

I wouldn't put a lot of faith in it....it's just a rumor at the moment. Who would Anderson coach against?

nick has better hands and has a reach advantage. GSp will have to take him down and just hold him down for 5 rounds to win. he does not have enough power to stop diaz and i doubt he will sub a gracie black belt.

i like GSp but i will have to pick diaz to win this one

Agreed. And Diaz also has high level cardio. He can fight all night and take everything GSP has.

                        More on the coaching rumor

The volatile pairing is likely according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, who yesterday told subscribers on his radio show (via Cageside Seats) that it looks like the two are the best candidates to coach the popular Spike TV reality show.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 14, which is presumed to start filming within the next few weeks, was initially going to be the playground for embattled middleweights Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping to trade barbs for an entire season before squaring off in a number one contender bout later this year.

That plan was scrapped when Sonnen's legal troubles continued to plague him to the tune of yet another suspension and a shaky standing among commissions in both California and Nevada.

Left to scramble with very few options on the table, it appears the UFC is poised to push Georges St. Pierre into a second stint as coach just one season removed from his first.

Opposite the welterweight king would be Strikeforce 170-pound champ Nick Diaz, who is certainly one hell of a fighter but not exactly the most comfortable in front of a camera.

A deal to set these two up to fight, at the very least, appears imminent, as strong rumors have placed the planned clash for this coming December in Montreal at UFC 140.

The timelines match up too conveniently to ignore but can UFC President Dana White really manage to put this all together? And on such short notice, no less? Stay tuned.

I hate to comment on these threads, because I usually make an enemy or 2. However, most people have picked GSP to lose to Shields, and he didn't. People like going with the underdog, just in case they win, they can say, "SEE, I told you so!" Diaz is a great boxer. But GSP is just that damn good. Yes, there will come a time where GSP will grow old, and his speed and skill will diminish. It happens to all the great ones. But watching GSP's training routine, I can't see him slowing down for a little while.

Agreed some people like going for the under dog, but some people are just fans of Shields and Diaz. Diaz's "boxing" is better. His cardio is just about as good. His chin is probably better. His BJJ is better. GSP has the size, strength, wrestling, and quickness on Diaz. It will be a good fight....just like the Shields fight wasn't a walk in the park like the GSP boys said it would be.

I like them both, so I am super excited about this fight and have wanted to see it for a long time.
