I, like many, would really like to see GSP finish a fight. Many people are saying that he is getting boring and fighting conservative for the W. Can this be blamed on GSP or on his coaching staff? His coach sets up a game plan and GSP never strays from his game plan. He follows his game plan no matter what happens better than anyone in MMA pretty much.
In the Shields' fight, GSP obviously got his eye scratched and it obviously shook him a little. You could hear it in his voice between rounds. To still dominate the fight and not allow Shields' to take advantage of the scratch has to be a big plus for GSP.
Also, did you notice that GSP was throwing the big over hand rights? This was no doubt from them watching the tapes of the Henderson fight and seeing how open Shields was to this strike. GSP is known for his kicks, superman punch, and now his jab....but when has he ever thrown the over hand right? Never. I have been watching GSP since day 1 in the UFC and I have NEVER seen this punch from him.
This leads me to the fact that GSP goes out of his box and learns new things and adapts with the sport more than any other veteran fighter out there, IMO. Could this be the reason for fewer finishes than he used to have? Is he just more tentative with the new strikes or submissions that he has been working on to really dedicate 100% to them in the ring?
I have been harsh on GSP lately (even though my household is a big fan) because he hasn't been finishing. But maybe this is a monster in the making. GSP (being as big, strong, and athletic as he is) learning all new facets of the sport and going outside his box to win fights, could be a very scary thing for the rest of the UFC!
