Georges St-Pierre vs. Anderson Silva Superfight Chatter Getting Louder

UFC president Dana White admitted that when he first contemplated arranging a bout between Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre, he didn’t give it serious consideration because he figured Silva would make a permanent jump to 205-pounds by the time GSP was prepared to relocate.

Now that Silva’s made it clear he wants to remain in the middleweight division, the fantasy of this superfight is becoming more of a reality.

“I honestly believed that Anderson Silva would move up to 205 pounds. He can carry that weight. He’s had great fights at that weight,” White explained following St-Pierre’s UFC 124 victory. “But he’s made it pretty clear that he doesn’t want to do it. Why would I tell a guy to move to 205 when he’s dominant and hasn’t lost since 2006, and never lost in the UFC?”

As Silva and St-Pierre continue to stockpile wins at unprecedented clips, White is becoming more willing to discuss the scrap the media and fans alike have been clamoring for.

“Georges St. Pierre, listen, say what you want, the guy looks great. He continues to win. He completely dominated [Koscheck on Saturday]. He looked good in the stand-up. Interesting fight. It’s an interesting fight,” stated White.

Both “The Spider” and GSP are No. 1 and No. 2 in most, if not all, pound-for-pound rankings, but White casts his vote for Silva as the world’s top dog.

“Anderson Silva, not only has he wiped out the 185 division, he also beat a couple of guys at 205,” the promoter stated.

“That’s why this whole debate over pound-for-pound – I love Georges St-Pierre. Georges St-Pierre is awesome. Huge superstar and everything else. [But] he lost to Matt Serra not too long ago by knockout.”

During Saturday’s post-fight press conference, St-Pierre said if he does decide to add 15-pounds to his chiseled frame, it would be for good. If the French-Canadian’s serious about making a permanent move, White would be prepared to arrange a title bout right off the bat.

“I don’t know. I’d really have to sit down – if Georges said he was going to go to ‘85 and stay there, then it would be for the title. It would be a superfight for the 185-pound title,” White said in closing.
Title fight first thing. Dana didn't make the money by taking those kinds of chances

GSP is gonna kill Shields. Its getting stupid how we keep trying to hype these guys who are going to fight Silva and GSP when we know full well that they arent as talented. GSP should move up, I just dont think its fair really to have him fight Silva for his first fight at 185.

        Re: GSP WON AGAINST KOS

Shields has a much better ground game than GSP. Now that is the only place that he would really have an advantage but he could potentially when this fight.

Just as Vitor could beat Anderson. Vitor has crazy hand speed and vicious power in them. I think it's a dangerous fight for both fighters.

Why is it not fair for him to fight Anderson first? GSP has some of the best takedowns in MMA. Anderson has historically been the worst against wrestlers. GSP is not that small. I mean he walks around at 200lbs. Anderson walks around at 215 probably. GSP has always had that much of a weight advantage in the division that he dominates. Not to mention that he is going to put on 15lbs to be a true MW. And if people want to debate him being #1 P4P, then he should fight the #1 P4P guy that he is in the running against.

He should for sure fight Anderson first IMO. What happens if GSP spends a year putting on the 15lbs. Then moves to MW. Then they match him against a Bisping or Maia and he gets beat. There goes the super fight. There goes the #1 P4P questions. There goes GSP's WW fights (I mean because he said he would not go back to WW if he moves to MW). I mean it just destroys the whole concept of what everyone wants to see. Then you have GSP having to win a fight or two or even three(which would take at least 1.5-2 years) to get a title shot in which time, Anderson will probably have retired and the fight would never happen. If the fans want to see Anderson and GSP fight, it needs to happen immediately.

I really just think GSP should get a tune up fight in a heavier weight class first I guess, Id be interested to hear what he thinks. I mean if he moves up than Im sure he wants the best possible preparation for a title fight. If he loses to Bisping than hes a bum and doesnt deserve to fight Anderson anyway. I can't agree that Shields has a much better ground game than GSP, If the fight is even close I will be surprised. I don't think anyone has a much better anything than GSP except for raw KO power.

Yeah, I used the wrong wording there. Overall control on the ground would go to GSP, probably. BJJ game goes to Shields no doubt IMO.
