Re: Sonnen tested positive for PEDs

Chael's camp says he will appeal:

"Chael Sonnen's camp has released a statement for the first time since it was reported last Saturday night that the middleweight contender tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug following his UFC 117 loss to Anderson Silva.

In an MMA Fighting exclusive, Sonnen's manager, Mike Roberts, wrote that Sonnen will appeal the California State Athletic Commission's claim that he tested positive for "abnormally high" levels of testosterone and that Sonnen will break his silence on the matter in the coming days.

"It is our policy not to comment on pending actions by the Athletic Commission. Chael is consulting with his legal advisors and physicians and will have a statement in the near future. Chael will file an appeal with the CSAC and looks forward to working with the Commission to resolve this matter."

The 33-year-old reportedly received formal notice of his test failure last Friday and has 30 days in which to file his appeal. Once he does file his appeal, it will be heard at the next CSAC commission meeting on Dec. 2 in Sacramento, Calif.

Sonnen is subject to an automatic one-year suspension and $2,500 fine. He was scheduled to fight Silva in a title rematch in Jan. 2011, but that fight is obviously on hold until the CSAC makes a final ruling on the case.

The CSAC has yet to officially announce the positive drug. They were expected to make an announcement Monday afternoon."

I thought they gave him a urinalysis. How can they tell his testosterone level from that?
They call you paranoid until the worst happens, and in the aftermath they will call you a hero.

It sounds like Sonnen will be cut from the UFC if he is found guilty. If this is all true, this guy is a freaking idiot for running his mouth so much.

Re: Sonnen tested positive for PEDs

I haven't heard yet. Here are some of Dana's comments:

"This could be a career ender for him...If guys are gonna be so dumb that they're gonna go out there and jeopardize their career over taking a performance-enhancing drug, it's insane."

"This great fight that happened is now tarnished."

Here is a section of the article:

"With Sonnen's career in the UFC now hanging in the balance, many fans are speculating about what actions White may take concerning Sonnen. What they may not realize is that White may not be the biggest threat to his career there is, but rather that of the California Athletic Commission, to which White commented, "Trust me, the athletic commission is gonna make an example of him."

Either way, it doesn't sound good for Sonnen. They are letting any details get out about this until the hearing I don't guess. Sonnen was supposed to do a live show before the last PPV and he canceled it.

His appeal is on Dec.2, so I guess we will get the details then. It has been swept under the rug for now though....

Re: Sonnen tested positive for PEDs

Chael Sonnen will not be able to use Testosterone Replacement Therapy as an excuse for failing his UFC 117 drug tests, according to a California State Athletic Commission executive.

Despite recent - and correct - reports that CSAC allows athletes to undergo TRT, the exception is made with two caveats: one, the fighter must give adequate prior notification to CSAC and two, he must not show levels of testosterone outside the norm when he is tested.

“When anybody is on any type of medication or anything like that they are required to provide physical documentation prior to us allowing them to compete here. That goes for any athlete that’s on any medication that could result in a positive toxicology test revealing abuse,” George Dodd told MMAFA.tv

“Our people review it and if there is any alternative benefit then that question will also get asked. But, from what I understand, even if you’re on testosterone therapy you would not have elevated testosterone.

“And it has to be approved. Let me remind you again: we have to clear it. We need to get necessary documentation from a physician saying why you’re on this medication, ‘these are the treatments that we’ve attempted and it hasn’t worked or it has.’

“Then we forward that information to our ring-side physician for review. If our physician agrees with their doctor then as long as they don’t test outside of a particular range they are fine.”

One aspect of the case which puzzled a lot of people was how Sonnen was permitted to fight despite telling commission executives he had “taken something” and would probably fail the drugs test.

Dodd explained that, under the legislation the commission uses, only a positive test sample is grounds for removing a fighter from a card - even self-admission is not enough.

“According to rule 303C, even self-admitting doesn’t allow us to stop a fight. A laboratory has to confirm it with a toxicology report. Even if we were to do a test for abuse ring-side for cocaine, marijuana, etc., we can’t stop it. It has to be verified with blood work,” he said.

Sonnen’s appeal hearing is set for December 2nd. He will be joined - in theory - by Josh Barnett, who is set to appeal the results of a test which stopped him getting a license to fight at Affliction Trilogy last year, which inadvertently killed the promotion.
It's not sounding too good for Sonnen. After reading the above quote, I don't see anything that Sonnen can say that would clear him of failing the test.
