Forrest Griffin: Jon Jones Will Whoop My Ass, But Not Worse Than Anderson Silva

After becoming the punchline of countless jokes for getting slapped senseless by middleweight king Anderson Silva at UFC 101 last August, it appears Forrest Griffin is unwilling to become the human punching bag for skyrocketing superstar Jon Jones.

“I hope I’m not fighting Jon “Bones” Jones. I might be. [Expletive] it, if I am, I am. I’ll do it, but I’m not even training right now,” Griffin told the Jason Ellis Show (Transcribed by CagePotato). “That’s a bad dude. That dude will whoop my ass.

“[Expletive] it. What’s the worst … I mean, it couldn’t be worse than Anderson Silva. It shouldn’t be worse than that, right?”

Let’s hope not. Most fighters would never be able to live down getting jabbed to death in a professional mixed martial arts contest, even if it came at the hands of the sport’s deadliest marksman. However, Griffin gets a pass courtesy of the lifetime Octagon employment status he and Stephan Bonnar received for their watershed battle to conclude the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Since you took off like a fart in the wind immediately after regaining consciousness, and been deftly silent since leaving Philly 12 months ago, exactly how badly did the Brazilian lay the smackdown on you?

“Every fight I go into, no matter what happens, it couldn’t be worse than Anderson Silva. Cause that [expletive] was a year ago and literally every day people ask me something about that. ‘What happened … What happened?’ You want to know what happened? It’s on page 23 [of my new book] if you need to know. Check it out.”

Be Ready When the Sh*t Goes Down: A Survival Guide to the Apocalypse can currently be found on your local Barnes & Noble bookshelves, so make sure to get your copy while supplies last. I don’t have the time to thumb to page 23 at the moment, but I’ll just assume the reason was because Silva was simply smacking you upside your head.

“Repeatedly, and I was very confused,” Griffin quickly pointed out. “I tried to punch him and he literally moved his head out of the way and looked at me like I was stupid for doing it. He looked at me like, ‘Why would you do such a stupid thing?’ He looked at me like, ‘Oh, did you really think you were going to hit me? What a stupid thing to think you slow, slow white boy,’ and then he punched me.

“I felt embarrassed for even trying to punch him. I felt like some kid trying to wrestle with his dad.”

Thank God pops never treated me that way…
How can you not like this guy's attitude. He is a straight shooter about everything.

He has been saying stuff like that since TUF. He hasn't given up...he is being funny but just tells it like it is. So many guys make excuses about losing a fight and with the Sonnen fight, guys are now making excuses even before the fight starts. He isn't "fake" like many fighters and that's why I like him.

Lame? No. Lame is laying on someone for 3 rounds trying to squeak out a decision and not trying to finish a fight. Lame is calling yourself an MMA fighter but not actually fighting. That is lame. Fighting anyone, any where, at any time, and always bringing a fight....far from lame.

Whatever man, he needs to see a sport psychologist. I have never heard of an elite athlete say stuff like that really. If he really thinks he is gonna get beat down then dont fight cause you already lost. And, if he really doesnt think he can hang with any of the top guys then maybe he should go to a lower organization. Having the right mindset is so freaking important in life in general. Look at the elite guys who come into a fight with a screwed up mindset (BJ vs Frankie) and see what it does. Then you have guys with very average skills and average athletic ability with the right mindset accomplish great things (Kenny Florian even though he hasnt won a belt has done quite well). Pinning someone down and squeeking out a decision is not lame, it may be boring or tactical or even smart, but not lame, they are in there to win or lose just like any other sport. Do i want to see my football team score 50 points every week? sure, but I would much rather them play smart, mythodical, defense oriented and shut the other team down and get wins. Is fouling at the end of basketball games lame, or running the clock down to 1sec then spiking the ball to get the last play of the football game lame? Its gamesmanship, and certainly as a spectator it can be boring but its smart. What if before the season started your favorite team released a statement that they were gonna get beat down by team A, B and C for sure, would you rush to buy season tickets? Prob not. Fighting anyone, anywhere, at anytime is great and all, but if you have already established you are gonna lose than ya thats kinda lame.

Being happy with just squeaking out a decision is lame IMO! It's Ultimate Fighting, not wrestling. If you can't go in there and do everything you can to finish an opponent, then you shouldn't be in there. Playing smart and being afraid to lose are too totally different things. There are some guys that are in there to win or lose....then there are some guys that are in there to not lose. GSP for example....he is fighting to not lose right now....he is not fighting to win. There is a difference. This is fighting, not basketball or football.

You are taking his comments FAR too seriously man! Listen, I play golf for money every weekend. I play in tournaments all of the time. If you ask me if I'm good, I'll tell you not really. If you ask me how I played, I'll say alright. If you ask me if so and so can beat me, I'll say probably. But that 100% does not mean that I believe any of that. It's part of the game. It's a bluff. It's part of your character. Some guys just don't go out and run their mouth and act cocky. What's wrong with that?

I really think that this is Forrest's way of getting into guy's heads. To me, it's no different than other fighters talking crap to get in their opponent's heads.

Nothing wrong with that if he really is just joking like how Rampage or Anderson will like point to someone and clown around and be like hes the best he would beat me. But you know Anderson thinks hes the best and hes just joking. Forrests comments just seemed different to me thats all, like he acts like he cant get any better or something, I dont know. I could go either way on most of the other stuff, for instance, sure I want to see guys get KOd but thats cause Im not the one fighting. As a fighter I would prob take a 20-0 record with mostly decisions vs a 15-5 record with 10 wins from KOs. Bottom line, keep winning and youre gonna make money. I dont really think fighting is any different from any other sport in that at the end of the day all that matters is if you got a W, fight of the night is great but if you lost then you still are a loser for that day. I want to be entertained as much as the next guy but I dont think pro athletes owe it to the fans to be entertaining, i think they owe it to the fans and to themselves to be the best that they can be and train as hard as possible and get as many W's as possible I guess. Whatever............

I can agree with you on the decision thing and getting Ws. And we really have no idea what is in Forrest's head, but I can just remember seeing him get kind of angry a few years ago and it's like his true beliefs came out. I can't remember the situation, but he basically was saying there was no way the guy should have beat him. He also has said in the past that you are going to have to fight when he gets in there because he brings the fight to you. That didn't sound like a guy that didn't believe in himself. Who knows what he is thinking really....he is different for a fighter for sure!

I guess mostly i am just saying that I hope he hasnt packed it in mentally. Sure, he will still go out and fight, but I hope he still is setting goals and training hard and believing in himself. From personal experience I know how important the mental game is and believing in yourself and just being confident.

I agree. I know in golf, it's like 30% skill, 70% mental ability that gets you to being a great player.
