  • GSP to train with Freddie Roach

The biggest cross-over star in mixed martial arts broke some big news on a national radio show today. UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre appeared on the Jim Rome radio show today and announced that he will begin training with boxing coach Freddie Roach.

Roach may be best known for training boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao. Roach has also trained current top-ranked boxer Amir “Killer” Khan. Khan made his American debut last weekend in a fight against Paulie Malignaggi in which he won in an 11th round TKO.

Roach is not new to coaching MMA fighters either. Several big names have learned under Roach’s tutelage over the years. Anderson Silva, Andrei Arlovski, Dan Hardy, and Gegard Mousasi have all gone to Roach over the years to improve their boxing skills.

St. Pierre told Rome today that he will be traveling to California today, and he will begin training at Roach’s Wildcard Gym in Hollywood. Many feel that St. Pierre already has the best striking game in the division, and training with Roach to improve his boxing could make him almost untouchable in any stand-up battles.

St. Pierre will begin filming the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter in a couple weeks in Las Vegas with Josh Koscheck, whom he will face for the UFC welterweight title after the show airs beginning in September.
Well, this should really put a kink in Kos' standup plans. GSP was the better striker before this news. With Roach polishing off GSPs boxing skills, Kos is in for a LONG night!

GSP is a better standup fighter than Kos. Kos has more KO power right now, but he is seems to be a one trick pony with that. He doesn't mix it up. GSP throws many different strikes at many different angles. The only downside I can see in GSPs standup is that his head has never had much movement which makes it a good target, but his ability to mix it up and keep his opponents guessing has always evened that portion out. Freddie Roach will fix that I'm sure.

Actually, the reason GSP is going to Roach is because he won't to improve his KO ratio, not because he is worried about KOS.

Well Im happy to hear this. Im always glad to hear that one of the top guys is still going out and searching for ways to get better. Im going to be very interested to see how much he improves. Get a little better head movement and a little more power and he could get pretty nasty standing up.
