It’s all but a sure thing that Jake Shields is done with Strikeforce. With his contract set to expire in a few weeks look for him to make his UFC debut late this summer or perhaps in the fall. ATO spoke to a source close to Shields this weekend and Shields is definitely UFC-bound and has two fights in mind.
First Shields wants a dream fight with Anderson Silva at 185 and then a shot a Georges St. Pierre’s welterweight title. Shields has competed at 185 and 170 and could matchup well with both UFC legends. Last month Shields messed up Strikeforce’s plans for Dan Henderson when he left Nashville with the Strikeforce middleweight strap and Hendo’s pride.
In October 2008 Shields submitted Paul Daley at EliteXC 10. Daley had knocked out Martin Kampmann and Dustin Hazlett and was on the verge of a title shot. Would Dana White allow Shields to walk into the UFC and fight Silva or St. Pierre? It’s possible but chances are he would have to defeat another contender to get a title shot. Shields may have to chose a division to compete in first then clean it out before getting a shot at another champion.
Only time will tell what happens but it’s a lock that Shields will be in the UFC it’s just a matter of when.
