  • Anderson mentions going to 170 to fight GSP!

Anderson Silva has a challenge directly in front of him at Saturday's UFC 112, but as he's one to do, he's already looking into the future.

The UFC middleweight champion apparently has his mind on all sorts of scenarios, including a possible drop to 170 pounds to take on Georges St. Pierre, according to an interview with Yahoo's Kevin Iole.

"I'd like to test myself and I always love to take on new challenges," Silva said in the interview. "It's not that I want to go fight Georges St. Pierre for his title. There's no doubt in my mind that he's the reigning champion, the absolute champion, in that weight category. But I just want to test myself and see how I'd do at that weight."

Silva said that if he did it, he'd have to do two fights at 170; one to make sure he could make the weight, and the second a superfight with GSP.

Such a scenario seems somewhat improbable given Silva's size. Though he fought as low as 167 pounds in the early part of his career, he's no longer the wiry kid he used to be. At 6-foot-2, he's fought as a middleweight and light-heavyweight since joining the UFC in 2006, and often gets as high as 215-220 pounds in between fights.

Silva also said he'd consider going in the opposite direction and potentially fighting as a heavyweight.

Neither seems very likely, as Silva's frame seems better suited to the 185-pound and 205-pound divisions. But it seems clear that he's on the hunt for a big challenge as long as he's able to get past Demian Maia on Saturday.
Hmmm...he needs a couple fights at 170 first huh? Is anyone else thinking that it would be perfect timing for him to drop to 170 as BJ is moving up to 170???? Maybe that would be a good test for both? Wow!! Those are 2 fights that would RAKE in the money!!

I dont think he will make it to 170 to be honest. Hes to big for that. If he did it would take a lot out of him

it would have to be at a catch weight. that way no one looses their belt and we see a super fight.

It would be a much better fight than any other WW except maybe GSP.

I agree, but Machida's was too when BJ almost beat him in LHW

I agree. He has fought and weighed in at 167 before, but if it were me, I would take the chance of being too weak...especially when you will be expected to beat the WW champ who is perfectly acclimated at that weight. On the other hand, Anderson could beat the majority of the WW division on his most depleted, worst day.

I actually think that is why Anderson is saying this. All he hears is GSP moving up to challenge for the title, and "can GSP beat Silva." I think he is tired of being compared to him and is ready for something to happen. Since GSP is not making anything happen, Anderson is going to start pressing it. I don't think he will move to WW, but I think by putting this bug out there, it sets up a catch weight fight.

I dont even think BJ would be able to hit Silva. Silva is just to long and rangy imo

Yeah, who ever beats him will have to do it on the ground or they will have to wait for his reflexes and timing to slow down.

Either of those would be a great fight. but remember Serra GSP?, I hope not but DM is pretty good. I think BJ is going to destroy edgar. There are so many scenarios. Silva-Rua, Macheta-GSP. I would love to see silva-Lesnar or maybe Silva-Carwin, Carwin has less wrestling background. He won't fight his training camp buddy. If he dominates DM, then I think he should fight pierre at 180. Pierre is a low BF welter, easily retains speed and skill at 180.
