“We will have to fight twice to get what we should have had in the first place,” says Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua’s manager Eduardo Alonso on the subject of a rematch with UFC light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida.
UFC president Dana White has already said that a rematch of the fight - which ended in a controversial decision for Machida - should be arranged as soon as possible. Alonso says Shogun’s team have their fingers crossed.
“It was unanimous here, there was no single person who didn’t give the victory to Mauricio,” he told Tatame. “I hope they agree to a rematch.”
Despite his sadness at leaving Los Angeles without the light-heavyweight belt, Alonso says he found much to be happy with in Shogun’s performance.
“This fight had a double taste: sadness, but also pride. Once again nobody believed in our team, just like the fight against Liddell, and we made an amazing strategy, that no one had made before. Unfortunately, we’ll have to fight twice to have what we should have today.”
Shogun himself says “It was a tough fight, I knew that Lyoto was good, [but] I’m sure that I won, everybody thinks that I won. I talked with a lot of people here and they thought that I won, but unfortunately I think that they gave him the victory because of some outside interests.
“Everyone was surprised with what happened in the end, but what can I do?” he added. Shogun watched the fight on video himself soon afterwards and applied his own scoring. “In my point of view, being fair, I won four rounds. People thought the same, Dana White, Lorenzo (Fertitta), Rickson Gracie was beside us… Everyone gave me the victory.”
Dana White has publicly stated that he thought Shogun won the fight. There has been no word from him yet on when a rematch might take place.
