"Collateral damage" from Jackson's "A-Team" role blocks counter-programming options
by John Morgan on Sep 17, 2009 at 8:00 pm ET
DALLAS – UFC light heavyweight superstar Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's decision to forego a December bout with Rashad Evans has resulted in a series of headaches for UFC brass.

Rescheduling main events and shuffling fight locations may seem troubling enough, but today White admitted he was forced to scrap plans for a potential third event in November based on Jackson's decision to take a role as B.A. Baracus in a feature film version of "The A-Team."

"Thanks to [expletive] B.A. Baracus, I couldn't [expletive] pull it off," White said. "B.A. [expletive] me. The collateral damage that was done by him doing this thing was unbelievable."

That revelation comes at a particularly interesting time when paired with today's Strikeforce announcement that the organization will host an event on CBS on Nov. 7 – the rumored date of the now-scrapped UFC event – that will feature top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko.

But White said the loss of a counter-programming option is but one of the effects of Jackson's Hollywood aspirations.

With Jackson withdrawing from a planned December bout with opposing "The Ultimate Fighter 10: Heavyweights" coach Evans – a bout that was scheduled to take place in "Rampage's" hometown of Memphis, Tenn. – White was forced to schedule a B.J. Penn vs. Diego Sanchez bout in the main event of the as-yet-unannounced UFC 107 event.

White said that switch forced a domino effect for the organization's remaining 2009 events.

"You have no idea how much collateral damage was done by [Jackson] pulling out of this thing," White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "It literally screwed up the rest of our year. We've got B.J. Penn fighting in Memphis, you know what I mean?"

White said he thought he had talked "Rampage" out of doing the movie, but the situation quickly took a turn for the worse.

"What happens is, [Jackson] calls up and says he's doing this movie. I said, 'No, you're not. You're going to fight Rashad in December. You do whatever you want to do after this fight. You want to retire and become an actor? You want to join the monastery? I don't care what you do after this fight, but 'Rampage,' you're going to fight this fight.'

"He said, 'OK.' Then he had his manager fly in from England and met me at the hangar before I was leaving to go out of town to tell me that he wasn't going to (fight Evans). [Rampage] and I haven't talked since."

While many MMA observers have wondered aloud how White could allow Jackson to walk away from the fight, the UFC exec said his hands were tied.

"You can't make anybody fight," White said. "I can't force anybody to fight. You don't want to fight, then you're not going to fight. And you don't want a guy going into it whose head isn't in to fighting, anyway.

"If you'd rather be on the set of 'The A-Team,' then you definitely don't belong in the octagon."

White admits Jackson's decision has caused a rift between the two.

"I feel like he [expletive] me," White said. "I'm not even talking to 'Rampage.' I'm really, really upset with 'Rampage.'"

One more victim of the collateral damage was original opponent Evans. White said he's simply not sure what the next move for "Sugar" will be.

"[Evans] is really messed up over this whole thing," White said. "He wants to fight 'Rampage.'

"When you get your mind set that this is who you're going to fight – he's bummed out about it. I think he's going to need a little recovery time before we decide if he's fighting 'Rampage' or somebody else."
It sounds like Rampage really screwed Dana over here. IMO, this is completely ridiculous! Rampage could have waited until the fight was done. Oh well, Rampage screwed up his deal in the UFC. He had it made as Dana's right hand man and now Dana doesn't even want to talk with him. I hope the movie does well!

Here is an interview with Dana talking about Huera, Rampage, and the UFC on network tv. He says Rampage will lose millions over this movie deal.

                Re: Rampage's Collateral damage!

I have to disagree. I say that if Rampage hadn't committed to the show and the UFC hadn't made the venue in Memphis, then none of this would have been said. Dana has every right in the world to be mad considering what the UFC has done for Rampage. I mean look at all the crap they got him out of...come on...Dana deserves a little respect for that. Rampage has gotten everything he has asked for in the UFC on a silver platter. He owes them a ton...and to just blow them off for something that could have been done later or planned around earlier...that is BS. The Fertitta brothers are not Dana's brothers. Dana makes the UFC the money. The Fertitta brothers just provided the money needed to take over the UFC. Yeah, in the end, they call the shots....but without Dana, the UFC wouldn't be near as big as it is.

And as far as Rampage going to fight somewhere else....let him go. He won't make near the money. He won't get near the exposure. He won't have near the competition. And to be honest, he isn't that great.

And why can't the UFC be on network TV? Strikeforce has been doing it on NBC. The IFL was on network tv. The WEC was on versus. And I am sure the numbers for Spike tv have been through the roof. The UFC is any more violent than half the sitcoms that are on now. Look at The Family Guy cartoon for example...it is just plain nasty sometimes.

The fighters make ufc the money not dana. People want to see the fights not dana so without the fighters dana is nothing. He needs the fighters. And like I said before he wanted to do a movie so what he's done a few small ones before and this was a great opportunity to get more exposure. Like I also said they cant fight for ever and for dana to say shit about him doing movies is a slap in anyones face that wants to have a chance to do a movie, its peoples dreams. Rampage is a great fighter just like in pride. he held the belts and now he wants to do something else maybe. But dana is just crying now and will get over it like he said. Dana doesnt control peoples lives he's scting like don king. And i'm kinds sure it was rampages laywers and his money who got him out of his crap it wasnt only dana.If rampage has sked for everything on a silver platter and got it who's fault is that, DANS'S fault thats who. Everyne gets bite i the ass sooner or later in life. as for ABC,NBC,OR FOX,ect, ect no way ufc is on them. maybe the others you mentioned but thats it

The fighters would not be anywhere near where they are today if it wasn't for Dana. The UFC has been around for 15-20 years and it has just blown up over the past 5 years or so. Why? Because of the marketing....not the fighters. The fighters have always been there. You are right, fighters can't fight forever. That is why the sign contracts. Contracts which should be fulfilled. Contracts in which the signee does what the contract holder wants them to do. If you go sign a contract with a mortgage company and buy a house, you think they will care if you decided that you wanted to live in your grandma's shed because it was free and that you weren't going to pay your mortgage anymore? Dana has said, that he thinks its great that these guys are looking out for their future, but you need to fulfill your obligations first. Look at Randy, he made a movie but did it after he retired. If they can make so much money acting, then why don't they finish their contracts and then go to acting? Why do they always seem to wait until they get beat to decide to do this? Rampage is a great fighter....but the new breed of fighters are better and there is nothing he can do about it. Chuck was a great fighter and now he can't win one. Franklin was a great fighter and now look. CroCop was a great fighter. Matt Hughes was a great fighter. The sport grows so fast that these guys can't keep up. You can't be one dimensional anymore and win...you just can't. And that is what is happening to these guys. The get passed by better guys and they are stuck in contracts they signed back when they could win. Man up and finish the contract and then do what you want. Rampage would have sat in jail until trial had it not been for Dana. You are crazy if you think the UFC did not help Rampage get out of trouble. The guy hit a car that killed a pregnant lady's baby...come on. How many people can get out of that? it was Dana's fault for giving Rampage all that he wanted. I'm sure Dana thought Rampage was man enough to stick to his contract. He didn't realize that Rampage would run once he started getting beat. If Strikeforce can fight on NBC...the UFC will be there as well.
