The UFC is going in a different direction than most people envision. The sport is shifting away from nuance and technical battles to a rabid quest for either blood or the knock-out. Most of the rule changes in the last few years have sought to heighten the probability of a clear finish to a fight. When I suggest that it's a UFC fighter's job (either Thales or Silva) to being action - not technical prowess - I say this because that's where the sport is at. You also have to keep in mind that the people in the crowd at the event cannot possibly see the finess and intricacy these fighters display... what they get excited about is limbs flailing around and fighters falling to the mat like a ton of bricks. Although I am not a fan of Silva, I admire his virtuosity, precision, and strength in the clinch. When I watched the match, I saw 2 fighters doing the best 'strategy' that was dreamt up before the fight. They were not fighting, per se... they were strategizing on how to either attain or retain a belt. If this is the price we pay for such folly - then let's get rid of the belts for the sake of an entertaining fight. We all have other things we could be doing, instead of watching one man flop to the ground on his back, while the other puts his hands on his hips and occasionally kicks a "reclined" opponent. The match was a farce. Any other conclusion could be evidence of some sort of delusional worship to a supposed 'strategist.'
