  • Brock calls out Mir

Looking at Brock Lesnar’s performance against Randy Couture on Saturday, it’s hard to believe many reporters called him the next Kimbo Slice.

With a record of 2-1 in professional mixed martial arts competition, some critics made the most of very little ammunition in Lesnar’s video library.

No matter how hard Dana White tried, he couldn’t shake the Slice comparisons.

“If I had hair, I’d pull it out,” the UFC president quipped.

But any parallels between the titanic champion and his backyard-bred counterpart were erased at UFC 91. Lesnar’s size and strength bridged the gap in experience between he and Couture, setting the stage for a unique changing of the guard in the UFC’s inconsistent heavyweight division. Lesnar is the greenest—and possibly the most promising—champion in its history.

In their eight minutes together, Couture felt every single pound of the forty-five between them. There was no room for him to be elusive.

“He’s a big sum*****, that’s all there is to it,” Couture said after the fight.

Lesnar’s isolation from the outside world turned out to be the best thing for taking down a legend.

“The only thing that mattered was that I believed in myself,” Lesnar said of the pre-fight skepticism. “You guys out there do your job. There’s always going to be that, but I’ve been an athlete since I was five years old. I don’t even have the internet. I don’t read the newspapers. I quit doing that a long time ago. I’m just happy I came and succeeded and all my hard work paid off.”

Despite a quiet confidence in press junkets leading up to the fight, Lesnar was quite the opposite when he walked to the cage.

“Honest to god, up until when they said ‘let’s go,’ I was pretty nervous,” he admitted. “I didn’t really know what to expect. That first round for me was kind of a feel-out round, and to feel exactly what this guy’s capable of doing.”

Like many fighters early in their careers, Lesnar woke up in his first exchange with “The Natural.” When Couture cut him with a punch in the second round, he got the motivation he needed to finish the fight.

“I wanted to get first blood on Randy; something in my head said, ‘alright, we’ve got to pick this up,’” Lesnar said.

Lesnar had taken steps towards finishing Couture early in the second frame, wobbling the champ with a right elbow as the two stood in front of each other. Couture drove for a takedown, but could not get his oversized opponent to the mat. The fight would be won, or lost, on the feet.

“After getting into a few exchanges with him I felt like I was connecting with him, and he connected with me but, quite frankly, I just felt like I was hitting harder and I was going to connect before he did,” Lesnar said.

When Lesnar’s right hand glanced off Couture’s temple, signaling the beginning of the end, he didn’t even feel it.

“I thought Randy was going to do a Superman on me and stand up,” he said. “I was a bit shocked. I don’t even know where it hit. I don’t care where it hit. He was on the ground and I was going to capitalize on it.”

With a shiny new belt on his waist—no doubt pinned to the last hole—the naysayers don’t bother him. He doesn’t know who Kimbo Slice is anyways.

“At the end, when the time is up and your hand is raised, that’s what matters,” he said.

The second bracket of the UFC’s unofficial heavyweight tournament commences on Dec. 27. Frank Mir will face off with interim heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to determine Lesnar’s next opponent. Lesnar said in no uncertain terms who he preferred to face.

“I need a rematch with Frank Mir,” he said.
I guess its better to call out Mir than Nog!!

The problem is that Mir didn't know what to expect then because Brock didn't have much tape. Now that there are tapes and Mir has fought and Randy exposed a few potential weaknesses. Mir will come out of the next fight a whole lot better.

You can get him on the ground. Randy would have had him down twice if it wasn't for Brock grabbing the fence. So he can be taken down. You are correct though, he will be tough to get in an arm bar. But when an arm bar is done quickly, it is hard to stop it. And once the arm is partially extended, its almost over.

I don't know if you have ever been in a triangle, but once the fighter gets the foot locked in, its almost impossible to get out.

                  Re: Brock calls out Mir

He was on his way down when he grabbed it. You don't have to pick someone up to get them down. Randy likes to trip to get them down. Not to mention that he had Brocks opposite leg pulled in where he couldn't use it for support. Had Brock not grabbed the fence, he would have went down.

How can you say that a guy with hands as big as his and with his strength, that when he grabs hold of the fence that it is nothing? Grabbing the fence is a great way to defend the takedown...that's why it is illegal.

                        Re: Brock calls out Mir

Yes the fence grab stopped the takedown, I have watched it several times as well because I recorded it. He grabbed it twice. Only one of the two times stopped a takedown, the other one he grabbed the fence early on in the clinch. Watching the fights on the internet is not the same as watcing on a big screen where you can see everything better. Brock's cardio was bad. He was breathing heavey between rounds and when the second round started, he was breathing with his mouth wide open. his movement slowed, his punches slowed, his takedown attempts were slow. Randy hit Brock in the face a few times. Randy controlled the clinch, and has stated that the knees were doing nothing. Randy stated that the size and strength difference did not affect him. He said that the only thing that got him was the 85" reach.

Of course Randy was breathing heavy....he was pushing around a 280lb man. I mean come on. I can guarantee that Randy would have lasted much longer than Brock would have.

Atually I like Brock now that he talks respectfully and has gotten away from the WWE antics. I did want Randy to win though, but its not because I hate Brock or anything. Brock has power, I will give him that but as far as standup being that good, how can you say that? We have only seen him land 3 punches. He can't kick, he has terrible head movement, terrible foot work while standing, etc.... He throws a hard straight punch and thats it. I also agree that Mir needs to submit to win..but that is what he needed the first time and he got it. Mir has great BJJ. Nog has even better BJJ and he can take the punch. Nog has never been KOd and has been in some wars. But the reason that Nog has been in some wars and is able to take the punches is because he has terrible head movement as well. But Nog has great standup...much better than Randy's. Hvae you seen the video of Nog and Anderson Silva sparring? Nog is good on his feet and amazing on the ground. Brock has a much tougher task ahead if he fights Nog.

I don't think Brock wins a standup fight unless its with a KO. KO is his only shot at winning a standup fight. On the ground he is in trouble with a BJJ guy, bottom line. He has to either KO them or take them down and avoid subs while he controls. Thats his only game plan. Nog and Mir can beat him standing if they avoid the KO. Both can beat him on the ground. I mean Brock got Randy on the ground and couldn't hold him down, there is not way he can hold Nog or Mir down....I am not referring to them being hurt then going down, that is a different story.

We are pretty much agreeing on alot of stuff man. I just have a different view..

Here is a link to a post-interview with Randy.

Even a “master strategist” doesn’t think of everything from time to time. Though UFC President Dana White fittingly hyped Randy Couture’s reputation for coming up with odds-defying game plans

Randy states that Vitor Belfort was actually stronger in the clinch than Brock and that he had more trouble with him.

He also states that he was really close to getting Brock deal with the single leg just like he did Gonzaga and that he would have gotten it had Brock not grabbed the fence. When asked about the knees, he said that Tim Sylvia's knees were worse. And he goes on the say that he was never overwhelmed with the size or strength and the only problems he had was with Brock's reach.
