  • Falcons sign Joey Harrington...

WTH? You have a guy like Schaub, why pick up Harrington? Don't get me wrong, I think Harrington has been going through what Garcia went through between San Fran and Philly, he was on teams that didn't run the right offense for him. I'm still confident that the right team could make a star out of Harrington, but ATL? You guys know I'm a die hard ATL fan but why go that route? They are obviously moving in the direction of a power run team with some of the guys they've picked up. Petrino's whole game plan is in your face power running, so I don't get it. Do they feel they got a Schaub quality back up for dirt cheap? That must be it and I would have to agree. If you took a guy like Harrington and gave him the O line that say Troy Aikman or Brett Favre had during their glory years, he would light up some defenses.

Anyways, I think this is going to make things interesting. Especially after they just picked up Chris Redman. Maybe they'll cut Chris. I can't see them cutting Shockley, he's the only one that can come in and doesn't change the scheme. But, you never know.

Did you forget Schaub is gone now? He replaced Carr in Houston.
I feel bad for Harrington that Mimai gave up on him for their phuquing hack of a QB. You will see MANY signs in Miami this year asking why they let Harrington go.

Yeah, my point was, if they were going to go with a tall QB without the ability to scramble, they already had that in Schaub. I know Schaub is gone, I've *****ed about that already. LOL What I don't get is, why? Why would they go after him. The front office said very clearly that Harrington will have to compete with Shockley for the back up job. They already had a hell of a back up, so WTH? It just makes no sense. But, if they get the kind of blocking line that Petrino is none for creating, it will be interesting to see what those guys do.

As far as backups go you can do no wrong with Joey Harrington. It's not like your starter is much better lol

Shockley or Harrington? Hmmmmmm...... A man who took a Miami team 6 games into the season and almost made them contenders, compared to a guy who's never played an NFL game? There's no doubt Harrington will be second. Unfortunately, I think Shockley is going to be another Jeff Smoker. A guy who coulda shoulda, but never quite did. He's only 6'1, which in QB standards, is short. He was also drafted at about 200 lbs, which is a light weight as well. His whole draft was based on his 2005 season. His 2003 and 2004 season was comaprable to Giovanni Carmazzi (Who?). Exactly! Don't get me wrong, I like Shockley, but I don't think he's gonna make it. If they had enough faith in him, they would have bumped him immediately to 2nd string, and picked up a hack like Jeff Blake as a 3rd stringer. Do you really thinkafter the season Harrington had, he's gonna settle for low $$$ and a 3rd string position? He could have held out and got a starting position somewhere.

bro put down the crack pipe! LoL

Garcia caught lightning in a bottle last year with the Eagles. Look at his tenures in Cleveland and Detroit. Sure those teams sucked, but he was a major reason why!! Even though he put up great numbers with the Niners, they made the playoffs how many times while he was QB? Once maybe? Most of the years he spent there they averaged about six wins per year.

As far as Harrington goes, I don't think he's ever going to be anything more than a mediocre back up QB. He's never shown much of anything. A talented QB on a bad team will atleast show flashes here and there (i.e. Vince Young, a young Elway or Favre).

2003 and 2004? He was the back up to David Greene, so his numbers don't count those years. He was never a starter until 2005, that's the year after Greene was drafted by Seatle. So, the littel bit he played was minimal during those two years. You can't judge a guy by his back up performance, you can only judge him by what he does when he's the main guy. As for his height, he's still 2 inches taller than Vick. I don't know what to expect but the head coach of the Falcons said that Harrington will be competing agains Shockley for the number 2 spot. So, who knows. That team still has plenty of over issues too. At least they get 7 picks in the first four rounds to fill some of those holes and prepare for the future.

Fair enough. But you can't judge a guy on one season either. The Falcoons never drafted Vick for his passing ability. So he could have been a tall Flutie like 5'8, and they still would have probably taken him. If I heard tomorrow that Gino Teretta was coming out of retirement to take over the Falcoon head QB position, I would even be more of a fan then I am now. Vick is NOT the answer. If Vick was on the 98 Vikings team with Carter, Reed, and Moss, would the Vikings still would have been as good? Definitely not. The receivers make the QB just as much as the QB makes the recievers. The coons have a top 3 TE, and some very very very solid receivers. This isn't a "Bash Vick" post, but I know I would feel 10X more comfortable with Harrington, who's already proven himself in Miami, then DJ Shockley.

Ahh shyt, don't bring that team up again. It's amazing how vividly I remember the '98 NFC Championship game against the Falcons. Anderson hadn't missed a field goal the entire season until he had a chance to ice the game with a chip shot. He misses, Billick and Green are shell-shocked, become conservative as all hell, and the Vikes lose in OT.

Randall Cunningham should have won a Super Bowl!

Don't get me wrong bro, I only want what's best for ATL. That's why I wish they would have traded Vick instead of Schaub. Also, I've liked harrington since he was at Oregon, so it's not an anti-Harrington thing. If in fact Harrington is best for that team and he can do what I think he can do, then I'm all for it. However, I personally think Shockley could do a better job than Vick. He's smarter, he's fast on his feet and he's a much better passer, and he knows how to play under pressure. What's more pressure than a first year starter in the SEC? Oh, and you can bash Vick all you want brother, I gave up making excuses for him a couple years ago. The thing I like about Shockley is his head for the game. One, he was the back up to David Greene who took over Peyton Mannings record for most wins by a college QB. Also, Greene was a Biology major and was very smart. So, Shockley was able to learn how to 'think' his way through a game. Vick, never had any such training. Vick never learned how to 'think' his way through a game, if the play fell apart he just ran, plain and simple. Now, Harrington, is another smart guy and I think he too is smarter that Vick. So, IMO, I think either one of these guys could play a smarter game than Vick can. Also, and this is my last point, one of ATL's WR's played with Shockley for 4 years at UGA and UGA utilized the TE as good as anyone in college. He had Leonard Pope and Milner. So, I think he could come right in and already have two guys he could hit just about every play. And, with Joe Horn and Finneran back, that's two sets of very good hands. But like you said, the QB makes the receiver. Just look at what they did to Peerless Price. He was a top 10 receiver. Vick just couldn't ever hit him. So he gets cut, because Vick can't get the ball to him. I hope Harrington, or Shockley, is the answer because Vick is not it.

                          Re: Falcons sign Joey Harrington...

My guess about Harrington is that his showing at Miami gave ATL a reason to believe that if Vick can`t start completing passes of 10 yards or more... or if he gets injured again (a real possibility) then they`ve got a second starting QB on deck. Vick is a real athlete but his accuracy is terrible and the reason why they didn`t make the playoffs, I believe that his days are numbered.
