  • Tim Hardaway comment

One week after retired NBA player John Amaechi publically identified himself as gay, retired Heat guard Tim Hardaway said on a Miami radio show that he would not want to play with a gay man.

"You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known," Hardaway said Wednesday, according to a transcript on the Miami Herald Web site. "I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States."
Hardaway was a guest on the show and was asked at the end of the interview how he would handle having a gay teammate.

''First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team,'' Hardaway answered. "And second of all, if he was on my team, I would really distance myself from him because I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room. But stuff like that is going on and there's a lot of other people I hear that are like that and still in the closet and don't want to come out of the closet, but you know I just leave that alone.''

Hardaway doesn't think he's alone in that view, either.

LoL I'm not homophobic or anything, who anyone chooses to have sex is their business, not mine, but I laughed like hell when I heard him say what he said. He said it so matter-of-factly and was so direct that it actually was pretty funny.

Yeah, I agree with you 100% bro. I do not agree with it at all and I wish it wasn't even around.....but....in my quest to be a Christian I am to love everyone, regardless of thier differences. It's ok to not like the actions of people, but it's not ok to hate the person. I'm sure Hardaway has done things in his life that were wrong, we all have. Anyways, it's too bad he would allow their actions to control his emotions. Anytime you let the actions of someone else control your emotions that bad, you have a problem. People have to make their own coices in life. You can give them advice, you can council them, but at the end of the day....'they' must make their own choices. That is what life is about. Sure, if someone were to kill my wife or child, I would in fact hate that person. I wish I was as strong as those Amish people in Penn who went to the family of the man who killed those girls and told them that they forgive him and they have no hard fellings toward them. But, that's the kind of love we are supposed to show other humans. Complete and total forgiveness.
I used to have superhuman powers....until my therapist took them away.

I think that if that is the way he feels let him state it there is no reason why someone should hide their feelings especially if he is asked a question directly relating to it. Wasnt he asked what he thought about gays in the NBA? So its not like he just blurted out I hate gays or anything he was simply answering a question and shared what he felt.

What's that old expression? "Hate the sin but not the sinner". It's one thing to simply not agree with the lifestyle, but to say they should dissapear or that he has no place on a team?!?!

The fact that Tim could say that so openly while being a black man is disgusting. He should know what our ancestors went through simply because of a difference in skin color. And if you take Hardaway's statement and replace gay with black. You'd have a SERIOUSLY racist and ignorant remark.

I swear his remark sounds like something you'd hear the KKK say

I fail to see the comparison when it comes to blacks and gays that people bring up all the time. One glaring difference is that blacks were persecuted because of who they were (or are as it still goes on today although in a more discreet manner), and had/have no choice. Homosexuals have a choice in whether they choose to be gay or not. I fail to see the correlation.

Like I said before, I do not care one iota what a person's sexual preference happens to be. However, it does bother me a bit when it's constantly shoved in my face with the gay marriage issues and such. It's the same thing in a restaurant, for example, when another straight couple is sitting close by and overtly displaying their affection towards each other (by kissing, grabbing, etc.) while I'm trying enjoy a night out with a girl. I don't wanna know who's f**king who unless it's my gf cheating on me...
