The kid may "think" he would rather have the money but this is a memory he will never forget. Money would be gone fast, the memory lasts forever.

i am a tangible type person. in many cases i would rather have an item that i can pick up forever rather than an experience that fades over time

it is kind of self serving though....right? i mean it is about how great she raised her son and not how he worked his ass off and persevered to finish school
