  • Running my 1st Trail Marathon/ultra this weekend

I have been doing some running and always wanted to knock off a few marathons and ultras and see how I like them. This is the one I'm doing in NH. I have never even run a 5k race never mind a 50k. I have run 15 miles while training but never in a competition. 27 miles in the mountains should be interesting.

    Wish me luck

    Here is event:

Kick ass man. My wife does marathons and ultras. I'm at all her check points with food or drink. Ultras are no joke. 24 hours of pure running.

Re: Running my 1st Trail Marathon/ultra this weekend

Race went pretty damn good considering. I had to suck it up and go through some adversity for sure.
I don't know if I wasn't hydrated well enough, my sodium intake was low, or I should have supped potassium days before race but I got major cramping 6 miles in.
Both quads and both hams locked up. I could even stretch cause the opposing muscle was cramped also.
As soon as it happened I started salt tabs, gel packs and time of water to try and fend off cramping.
This had never happened in training so it caught me by surprise. I got pretty scared that I wasn't going to be able to finish the race. Failure is pretty much is not an option for me and I didn't want to hurt myself pushing through cramps.
I ran the rest of the 24 miles in pain with both legs cramped but did finish the race in just a little over 5hrs. A respectable time but all I can think of is how could I could have done if I didn't cramp.

A trail 50k is usually at least one hour longer than a street marathon on average. So I guess I didn't to do bad.

Can complain considering it was my 1st race of any kind. I will try to make adjustments so it doesn't happen again!

It took me about 3 days to regain use of my legs and now 9 days later my feet still hurt and I can still feel a little soreness. I had to crawl to the bathroom the next day after the race and had to lift my legs into my car with my arms. It was worth it though!

Nice bro. Idk for sure but sounds like you needed more training in the hills. I'm doing the tough Mudder in Tahoe coming up next month and I been hitting the hills for 16 mile runs once a week. When I did a marathon a few years back I was doing hills work often..
Hit me up if u wanna ba more about running and different training methods.

But good time man for sure.

Yeah bro, I have earned a few orange headbands myself and I have a spartan beast coming up sept 21st.
I have done some serious hill work in the past and never cramped at all. That why i got so caught off guard. I was on a pretty damn good pace prior to cramping so the added intensity and elevation of this location might have done me in. Who knows, it was my first 50k so i have alot to learn and tweak. From everyone one I talked to it seems it just happens sometimes. But your right, more hill work can never hurt.
Yeah i love to talk training. Nothing beats hill repeats. Adds speed, and stamina.
I have my 1st street marathon in Oct. After all this mountain stuff and trail ultras I am hoping it sets me up for a good time.
                          This your first tough mudder?

Thanks bro, Yes definitely happy I finished and was able to legitimately run the whole thing other than stopping to stretch and eat at aid stations.
