I have a mutt that is half Siberian Husky - very smart and healthy dog. Vet still doesn't believe he is 10 years old. I would vote for the husky but only if you live in a climate he can handle in the summer. They also "roam" a lot.

I was thinking about German Shepherds but there are always a lot of little kiddiesvisiting witheir parents(children of friends and family) in my house and they might get scared of it.

I love huskys but they have way too much energy for me when they are young and can get destructive when not challenged and mastiff will pretty much be content to take a walk with you or lie under your feet and nap.

I have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and she's a great dog. Athletic, very intelligent, and great with kids.

I'd go with a German Shepard. It is the smartest dog I've ever been around!
