There was a study one time, I think it was harvard grads, and they tested them on vocabulary when they graduated, then twenty years later revisited the grads and income level was directly related to their vocabulary scores. Just knowing the definition of a lot of words helps you understand things you read, communicate easier, etc etc...
Its important to keep adding words to your brain all the time. For kids, it is important to expand their vocabulary as much as possible as early as possible. Just having a big vocabulary alone will almost guarantee success in school. They say as you age, your vocabulary can start to shrink if you dont do vocab building.
So I was thinking I will start a thread and add a couple words a day here from different places. Places like "The 1,000 words everyone should know" etc...
If you have any words you like, please add them to this thread. Thanks.
alacrity
(n.) eagerness, speed (For some reason, Simon loved to help his girlfriend whenever he could, so when his girlfriend asked him to set the table he did so with alacrity.)
inveterate
(adj.) stubbornly established by habit (I’m the first to admit that I’m an inveterate cider drinker—I drink four pints a day.)
