Originally posted by Mudge I was informed on another board that Ziplip no longer masks IPs, sent myself an email from Ziplip, and voila, its true. TIME TO MOVE ON FOLKS.
Sorry folks but when you connect to your ISP your IP address gets logged and is keep as a file on the server. Also all your packets have a IP tag for both incomining and outgoing packet. There is no hiding from someone who knows what their doing.

Exactly, basically you would be labled a malicious hacker if you got caught, use anonymizers, even if you have to pay for the service it may be worth if if you feel your at risk (which we all are somewhat).
I'm thinking of using a russian email server and sticking to that.
No mature ISP would let heavily forged packets go through thier routers, it is extremely easy to catch, if you try to use an IP address that is completely illegal on that network (doesn't exist on that network, maybe some other ISP but not thiers), they would know it should have have originated from within and the router can trash it or shout out an alarm, or whatever. If you expect to run some packet forger program on a windows box and be safe, forget about those dreams right now.

Exactly, this is why the anonymizer leaves a dead trail for them, however if they wanted to log all traffic outgoing and it was not encrypted they may still have encriminating evidence against you.
Just as much as I can at work see if someone is surfing for steroidal pages, you can be monitored to anything you download or upload, this means email and all traffic from your machine, by your ISP in coop with the feds. So, as long as the anon service doesn't capture this stuff (they can be asked to turn over data) then you are "home free" as this is your dead trail. You could also do anonymizer to anonymizer.
There used to be an upkept list on the net, if you search for anonymous proxy, you may be able to find something semi recent, most privacy freaks follow this stuff.
Originally posted by Aragorn I just talked to a bro over at CJM and he's been using and sending emails without a problem yesturday...I'm confused....guess that's why I'm at hushmail though

You can use and send mails just fine, the problem is that instead of the 10.0.0.1-5 etc that it used to list, now lists your real IP address, which is like your license plate on the internet.
Maybe they even did it to discourage use by "us", who knows.
Originally posted by Jorta I'm going to admit ignorance here. I've never heard of an IP address scrambler. Judging from Mudge's reply are you referring to IP Masquerade (Network Address Translation)? Or just changing the IP address in an email header?
Just like putting a fake from address in your email program (although more difficult), in your outgoing ethernet frames you can actually lie about your source IP address. Since network equipment primarly at the local level uses MAC address instead of IP, this can be legal on some networks, but any network or ISP worth half a damn this will NOT work on. If you were already being watched it would not matter anyway, so its better to just not dream of these things anway.
I would laugh if anyone though thought NAT made them immune LoL, since everything goes out on the routers public addy anyway doh
I have an IP masker for Win95, it may work on only the early Win95, and only on a LAN for kicks, so nothing more than a toy that wont even work on most systems. You can also mask your MAC if you were on a LAN or broadband connection, I've seen some drivers on Windows machines that allowed you to enter a new MAC address, on Linux you can use IFconfig unless that has changed. Without this being the super computer geek doing these things for a specific reason, stick to anonymizers and secure email, because at the ISP level they can still see everything you do, and one way to raise eyebrows is to play around with things that set off alarms, like the above...

Thanks for the clarification. I know a lot about how this stuff all works, but I try to keep an open mind for new products just in case I was asleep at the switch. In this case I just could not see how it *would* work.
When you forge your address, or scramble it, you are changing the source of the information or the information used to get data back to you. ISP's can, but generally don't block packets based upon the source of the packet (although they should). They can do this using a number of techonolgies, but either they don't know how to use them or it would slow down their routers too much.
What will get dropped or rerouted is the packet returning from the remote host to you. It's like putting the wrong return address on a letter. When the reciever of your letter sends it back, either it goes to the dead letter office or to the wrong house. Since sending email is like posting a bunch of letters that will never get back to you (and they need to for the email to work), scrambling your source is just not going to work anywhere outside your own LAN.
The easiest way to solve this is to use the remailers or anonymous proxies - but in the end you should assume that anything you do in the digital world can be traced back to you - eventually. You can only really remain truely anonymous to someone who does not really care all that much about finding you in the first place.
Ok, thanks for letting me know I was not nuts. Nothing to see here. Move on.

I can tell You probably do the same thing I do or something similar...
Yeah, basically a PITA dream, just stick to anonymizers and encryption, best not to go to jail for anything, but it would best be 1 and not 2!
Too much work? Naaaw. Just some simple steps. MultiProxy is very good. Right now I think Im browsing this board from Japan. Yesterday I was a college student at UCLA
If you guys want to know where to get a killer IP scrambler/masker, PM me. Yes, its easier to switch to hushmail, etc. but this has more than 1 use to it.

If you have a link too it, by all means share it! A few of us would be interested to play with it I'm sure. I'm on computers through most of the day, so I can play with it at work or home.
