Most fight scenes are executed in a flurry of quick cuts to hide all of the moviemagic. Not this fight from Oldboy, which sees the film’sendlessly tortured protagonist take out a hallway full of thugs in a single masterfullyconstructed shot. As a technical feat alone, it’s a marvel. Oh Dae-su beats downeach henchman one by one in an elaborate battle executed in real time, ending ratherhilariously with our hero getting tuckered out (he still wins of, course -- it was just alot of work). The fact that the scene was pulled off without an injury is extraordinary.It was an instant-classic film fight and an amazing filmmaking accomplishment from one ofthe true cinematic masterpieces of the 2000s.
