I was getting killed on my internet charges with verizon. I went over every month and was paying $100+ a month. Last week my verizon card got broken and I figured I had no access to the internet. Well, last night, I was just messing around and clicked START, then Connect to...it brought up several wireless connections available. One of them worked and I got online for free!LOL...How is that? I live in a very rural farm area with neighbors far away. This new connection even works better than Verizon. How do you explain this? Crazy. I could have saved over a thousand dollars had I known I could get it free.

Re: From $100 a month to free INTERNET???
You're tapping off someones carrier, somebody around you has an unsecured router. I was able to do this too for months till it became secured, was nice but it was kinda like picking up an AM radio station sometimes the signal was good, sometimes not, in certain parts of the house too. Im thinking this is regulated by the FCC too ?Leaders did what others weren't willing to do, now they enjoy the things that others do not.

Well, until they secure it, you will have access. My guess is that if they don't have it secured, they don't know how to tell if you are on it. But it is stealing...so that's up to you.

My only concern is that I dont want someone else to have to pay for going over their monthly bandwidth allowance. The reason Verizon was so expensive for me is because I was only allowed 5 gigs per month and I was going over that every month. If you download a few youtube videos, it can put you over for the month and the overage charges are ridiculous. Who knows, maybe someone else nearby was tapping into my Verizon wireless internet signal and putting me over every month.
One more question: Lets say it is a neighbor. Is there any way they would know that I was accessing their signal?
There is a gigantic factory kind of close by, about a mile or two. Could the signal be coming from there??? I mean, how far do these signals go?

they possibly coudl see that there is another computer on there but i really doubt that they know how to do that if they are rocking unsecured network. If you are picking up a signal from that network they have the best router known to man and probably some serious alein tech. lol no the signals don't travel that far. really 100 yards is a long way for a signal to travel.
