Re: Hey ketsugo ?
ketsugo is the main style of jujutsu that I practice. What do you mean what is the function of tanto style blades? Do you have even the faintest knowledge of using one? they are perfect for slashing and stabbing. What made japanese blades unique was how hard the metal was folded. Which is a long story. I honestly dont get the function of your questions? In feudal japan they used blades on the field of battle the katana was the main weopon- I would have to explain military history , ettiqutte of the bushi of when and why each sword was used. The bushi- now refrrred to as samurai were well trained warriors- Each Asian culture had their soldiers. The filipinos - had the Moro Warriors whom also specialized using bladed weapons- various shaped swords and macheted like weapons. The indonesians as well. What is common to these three was their methods of combat are based on these weapons and any time the empty hand was used the principles were the same. Various schools of koryu bujutsu- meaning old school have its origins on war. bujutsu or jujutsu no matter what school diaoto ryu or yanagi ryu- even togakure ninjutsu all were used as principles of war to cripple and kill the enemy on the field of battle. JUJUTSU relates to war. When I train certain military units regarding weapons we use these principles . THis differs from the ***** bullshit that I see on TV - training in the ring I hate, Brazilian Jujutsu was developed and originated at the kodokan for example - the judo school. Rolling around wrestling to me and most authentic japanese pracitioners dont consider that jutsu - jutsu refers to war. The Kodokan also developed the dan ranking system- that bullshit system where they present you with colored belts- initially develped for sport in order to distinguish skill level for competition. The menkyo system was used by the bushi. Karate has no realation to this- it was consiodered the art of the peasant - the samurai spit on them - they had no use for them- These people samurai would not want to touch with their hands as they were considered by them to be filthy- so the Tanto would be used to slice their throat or stab them- So really to answer an uneducated question- DO you understand anatomy? think of where in the body all the tendons cross the joints and the arteries also cross near the surface of the skin- the flat area that is razor sharp- you cut or slash- so if some asshole tries to kick you or punch you - you allow the blow to pass you but you extent the tanto and slice a tendon or an artery so you can either cause them to bleed to death or cripple the limb- while they react to this- you then take the sharp end then stab them in a vital area like kidney, heart, eye each clan of warriors no matter what culture you seek has their own unique method of utilizing the principle of combat- ketsugo for instance means mixed- meaning drawing from many methods- some specialize on snapping necks or slashing the artery in that area, some specialize in snapping elbows or shoulders. In INdonesia or philipines they may utilize different ranges by leghtn of weapon - sword= long , machate = medium, dagger= short, karambut= short but you stab then rip open the skin. I have spent my life practicing and teaching these. I have served in Desert Storm and I have taught military, police and I have my own underground school, meaning I dont advertise - invite only. Does that answer your questions?? SO what does dave150 mean ? And why do you ask in such a odd tone like this? "and what the fuk is a "ketsugo"?? everytime i see your name i think of ketsup for some damn reason""- Are you being disrespectful for some reason? I dont know what you mean?Last edited by ketsugo; 04-28-2011, 02:25 PM.

Re: Hey ketsugo ?
Basically the tanto is the same as any other blade. Its whatever you like. and Dave my life has been devoted to the study and practice of combat- Ketsugo is my main system and all my other sytems revolve around my knowldge of ketsugo. As a child I did karate, tae kwon do and Boxing- not because I think they are the best, but because as a kid its whereever mommy and daddy sent me. WHen I got older honestly Im embarrassed to say I studied this or got black belts in these - SO when I sit here and say its a joke- Im talking of things I may have done 6 hours daily for my entire childhood. I guess it depends on what you like- If you like competition and want to fight in a ring- you study MMA or BJJ or Boxing, etc etc, If you are impatient and need to fool yourself by wearing gay white pajamas and earn colored belts then you go karate LMAO, I shouldnt saythat because you can gain fitness , flexibiltiy etc etc- To me trophies and belts are to me against being a martial artist- so thats why I personally in my world hate that shit. I can appreciate the hard work but I just have no interest in it at all- even though I did them as a kid and teen ager- when I joined the service and after seeing in my life people getting murdered , raped and become victims of gang violence- guns, blades and martial arts that emphazise killing quickly became my hobby and interest. Knowing what truly works in life or death- I see how ridiculous some of the common method and idead of fighting can be. Training for ring competition fighting- is not anything like saving your life. Yeah skills can cross over , but when dealing with your life- always assume you are protecting yourself against an expert assassin- otherwise you can be taken too easily. Pretty much every modern day martial art will not save your life in these situations. So me?? I wont waste my time, at 23 I stopped going to these type of classes and I stopped teaching jumping jacks and the hurdlers stretch. THe science of real combat the weak can ove come the strong, its not about speed or age- The mind is the greatest weapon and can figure out how to get out of many situations. leverage, momentum, intelligence- these things you can continue to understand how to use them despite age, fitness or disability. My signature - is actually saying just thatLast edited by ketsugo; 04-28-2011, 03:23 PM.

Re: Hey ketsugo ?
I was just questioning the style/shape of the blade, how the blade angles near the tip. I have a couple of knives with tanto style blades as well as drop style, I perfer them cause I feel like they will slash deeper. did I answer myown question ?Leaders did what others weren't willing to do, now they enjoy the things that others do not.

I specialize in knife fighting at my dojo. Upon joini g my first class normally involves knife drillsLast edited by ketsugo; 04-30-2011, 07:15 AM.

Re: Hey ketsugo ?
Another interesting tidbit- the tanto has the same design as the katana. You realize that in knife fighting no matter what school- the style or concepts are the same whether the weapon is 15 inches long or 5 feet long- its just the distance. The curve of the blade is designed for when you slice down it makes it easier to cut into flesh. The point when you stab allows penetration and the curve makes it easier to rip open the skin . Tanto-jutsu is very deep method of fighting all part of the greater idea of koryu-bujutsu . "jutsu' means technique , but the connotation realtes to war. Thats why when I hear Brazilian jujutsu and Im aware that it was invented in the kodokan- that its judo. The myths of martial arts are so confusing I just hate that a whole culture futher makes an already obscure concept more confusing. Jigoro Kano- invented judo by sythesizing various forms of jujutsu. He purposely removed all the lethal methods of fighting to make it a sport and a method to utilize the principles of "ju" = flexible, pliability (with leverage and momentum) . Look again- he took out the LETHAL techniques so children could practice without dying and also to make sport out of combat principles. One of his advanced students of JUDO taught the eldest Gracie but they still called this WATERED DOWN VERSION jujitsu. So this is not my opinion. Its a very clear fact. Yes sports can be dangerous, but the intent is to dominate in the ring, where there is rules. The battlefield, the street, saving your life does not have rules or compassion- It only knows survival. So to me, when a group of people teach survival with this- is like being sacriligeous and it really disgusts me to no end. Jujutsu is a conmplete method of combat using weapons and crippling methods with intent to kill maime or cripple- That is the tradition. All the colored belts, the bowing and white flood pant pajamas were invented to make money- EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. I just cant bare to hear or see it anymore

Re: Hey ketsugo ?
ketsugo, minus some of the attitude things (which we all do time to time so no flame at all) you presented a great display of your knowledge. I wish you could re-write this and have Fuzo place it as a sticky.
Like you I have a disdain for organized competitions like karate, MMA, etc. Everybody claims to be a black belt, everybody claims to be a fighter. But like my mentor put it to me, the true person to fear is the guy who doesn't say how he's going to kick your ass, how he's a black belt, how he's a cage fighter!
Don't get me wrong I enjoy watching MMA and boxing fights but the "real" world application doesn't apply like that.
