Closed would do more damage, I would think. I think of open hand strikes as more humiliating than damaging.

With an open hand you have more area of impact and are less likely to break bones in your hand. a straight punch is a lil harder to block, and you can break bones or get cut pretty good if you hit teeth.

stiking is actually a very poor method of fighting. However since boxing and MMA are so popular and the public even long time martialartists have no idea what self protection really means - I guess people continue toover emphasize ineffective fighting method. Now considering that a boxer wraps and wears gloves to protect his hand- that speaks volumes right there. See In all my classes including the military guys we never teach punching. Its really useless unless you are in the RING. If you must- aim for a soft part of the body like stomach or kidney. I cant really use the term open and as my hand strikes that are comon in many styles of kung fu or kali require an open hand but utilizing different areas- such as thumb knuckle - finger knuckles supprted by the hand .A plain open hand can be used many ways- palm, palm heel finger tips the strike can set up ripping or a palm heal to jaw bone before grabbing and snapping the cervicle vertibrea by using the head as a fulcrum I guess could do damage= instant death. It is only ignorance that people dont understand the difference between fighting for your life than fighting in a ring against one person with rules. With respect to all- anyone thinking that a punch is the most effective is truly ignorant and naive- this is a huge thing I cover when teaching and honestly I cant even belive how many people have no idea . Guys spending 20 years pursuing a black belt in karate or tae kwon do - are the most diffficlt people to teach- because it goes against every thing they have practiced all their life. The mere fact that the dan system of ranking ( white-black belt) indicates genda- budo for peace and exercise- It is not for war - go back in history - military history of these cultures - not martial art books or mags as every teacher will say his is the best because he want every one to come to his school and pay. Its a rule that after like 1865 -1900 most asian cultures began using western weapons and guns- so they abandoned the tried and tru methods (koryu-bujutsu) all cultures watered down the systems On PURPOSE to teach the public or like Jigoro Kano had a dream to teach to children so he took out all the lethal techiniques so kids could practice safely- FACT not opinion. He took out all the LETHAL techniques can you see this??? he created JUDO and his top judo instructor passed on all that to the eldest Gracie who brought judo to Brazil and what now???? BJJ. So really it kills me to hear people call wrestling and grappling judo- it f/n kills me. Ya know Mr kano also though wow I want to make contests but separate by skill- so you know what he did = colored belts each rank - the DAN sytem. Most real and authentic traditional asian systems have no ranking system NONE- but stupid americans want immediate gratification- so now we have the joke of the century colored belts not just injudo but every where. The indonesian and filipino systems just have titles such as dimaslang - which means unhittable or one that cannot be touched- Guro is teacher or master. When I see chinese systems using the dan system its almost sacriladge as the cultures hated each other. In japan jujutsu or bujutsu- methods of war- the bushi /soldiers now commonly referred to as ninja or samurai used jujutsu or jutaijutsu etc. karate was okinawan and what the common folk used- not the tradition of war. What as happened over the last century is that greed and money has ruined the integrity. Television has sensationalized things that would never work for real. Ya know I been training since 5- shotokan karate, tae kwon do, boxing, kenpo, wing chun kung fu, pukulan tjimade silat, cabales serrada excrima, arnis lanada, kali illustrisimo, togakure ninjutsu, diato ryu aiki jujutsu, ketsugo jujutsu, yanagi ryu, iga ryu, aikido, judo brazilian jujutsu are the main schools i stuck with for 40 years i dabbled in over100. my life devoted to this- so when i get some idiot tell me how effective he says the brazilians are it takes all my power to be polite. If anyopne trained with me now they would know that class is for learning concepts and principles of how to kill and cripple a human being- not calisthenics no push ups no stretching- even my best tkd school famous for high kicks would condemn strtching the most overated thing in ma. Puinching for my purpose of killing to save my life is a waste of training. However if you love boxing or ring fighting- its better because the rules and equipment allow the punch to inflict more damage. On the battlefield or dark alley when fighting for your life- the puncher against someone that knows how to survive is doomed
