Strange hair growth pattern?

I looked at my back with my wife's little makeup thing, viewing myself in the larger bathroom mirror, and I noticed that I am unbelievably hairy along my lats, and right above my buttocks. I'm talking thick luxurious mink quality pelt here. But the strange thing is that right down the middle of my back is a clear swath of skin. Strange.
