  • Anyone do body work in here?

I have this little s-10 that I have been driving and it is an ugly teal green. Since this thing is going to end up a project eventually, I was thinking about going ahead and working on re-painting it. I have never done any body work or anything, so I have no clue where to start. But it is something that I would like to do myself, if I could.

To start, would I just get a DA sander (which I have) and some 180 grit sand paper and just strip the paint down to the metal? Is that where you start? Then fix any issues that you see and then primer? Also, just fyi, the bed on this truck is in horrible shape. The previous owner had a load of steel fall on it and it demolished the tailgate, ripped out all the hooks in the bed, and pretty much opened every seem in the bed. So, I figured I could start working on the bed to kind of "learn" what I am doing, and see how that turns out. That way, if I mess up....it really needs a new bed anyway.

I don't know....it's just a thought and would give me a project to work on.

Nothing wrong w/ trying stuff yerself, broh. You can save a ton of bux doing bod work yourself! But the way the pros do it when they strip a bod by sanding they use rough sandpaper like 36 or 40 grit. And honestly, orig factory paint provides good "tooth" for a new paint jobby, especially if the orig paint is in good shape and not all chalky and thin. What is done is the old paint is scuffed up, then a sealer is sprayed on to keep the old paint from "bleeding" through, then the new primer and paint is sprayed on. Soooo you might be making more work than is necessary for new paint by stripping all the old paint off. Maybe just concentrate on fixing dents and stuff if there are any, and live w/ the old paintjob until you are ready for some new paint.

PS: Also look for a "real" parts store in your area that sells paint and body shop supplies, and make a friend there. A few kind words to those guys can save you a ton of BS when making product selections. As is true with all things, ya gets what ya paid for. If you are going to go through all the trouble of laying down some new color you def want to use quality products. Nothing sucks more than doing all the work only to have the paint/ and or body work end up looking like chit after only a short time.
