My dog keeps running away

He's 3 years old. Neutered. In the last 2 months, I have had to take him to the vet TWICE to have him stitched up from getting the shit ripped out of him by barbed wire. I let him out back and he jumps over a 6 foot fence and takes off. Its so frustrating. I am afraid of him getting hit by a car or some farmer shooting him. Last week he took off and I went looking for him and when I found him I slapped the shit out of him. Im embarrassed to admit that I did that because I NEVER hit a dog. I dont believe in hitting dogs, but my frustration got the best of me that night.
I dont know what to do. I even tried a 50 foot cable but he kept wrapping it around trees.

Yes, getting another dog might work, or it might not work.

I have considered putting a hot wire in, like they use for horses. Or one of those $300 wireless radio frequency fences. Has anyone used one of those?

damn jumps over a 6ft fence! that dogs a beast. I had issues with my dog getting out a lot, then a few months ago he got slammed by a car @ 40mph. Since then he hasnt tried to get out 1x. Obviously that doesnt help ya but I tried a lot of stuff with him he just is hardheaded and had to learn the hard way I guess. You can always keep him on a lead outside tied to a run of some sort.

This dog is a beast, pit/mastiff mix nothin phases him. He got launched 10/15ft, asshole in the mini suv didnt stop, but my dog took off into a parking lot where I grabbed him. Didnt even take him to the vet all he had was a broken toenail. That was 3 months ago and he hasnt gone for the road once since.

We've used hotwires for our dogs since I was a kid. They work great. It only takes one or two hits and the dog learns not to go near it. Most dogs you can turn it off after they learn and just leave the wire up.

the hot wire might be the best idea. I wonder if you can run a double wire off the same box. Like one for the top of the fence and a lower one to keep him from digging out

Most of them have 4 or 5 terminals to run multiple wires dzone. I used to like to grab my Buddha arm and then grab the hotwire lol. It will go through you and shock the guy on the end lol. Just remember on the one you put on the bottom to keep the weeds off it or it will ground out and not work.
