  • Pony tails on dudes looking for work

So this 48 year old guy with a pony tail down to his ass comes in to my office yesterday telling me how he hates his job and is miserable, etc etc...I ask him if he has tried to find work elsewhere. He tells me he has gone to one interview after another and "nobody wants to hire me! waaa waaa". He even has a college degree.
Hey, if your occupation is a rock star or professional wrestler, etc maybe a 3 foot long pony tail is fine. But If youre in the job market, well, Maybe Im being a hardass but I think he needs to pull his head out of his ass and get a %$&#Ing HAIRCUT.
Unless you have amazing guitar skills , pony tails on guys just dont work in the job hunting market. Not now, not ever. What do you all think?

Sorry, no offense to you guys with pony tails who are already employed.

I think hair shouldn't matter one bit, but I know there are people who judge someone by this.

Don't think the fact that one has a ponytail means he looks like a fool.

My husband had a ponytail for 18 yera sand always had a great job. So it's okay to hire a clean cut short haired person who might be a real dum****, but it's okay cause he looks good.

never once did i say having a pony tail makes you look like a fool. I said looking like a fool makes you look like a fool. Personally i don't think a pony tail screams business professional. I have that right to decide that if you come to interview with me. My father has had a pony tail ever since i can remember but if he came to my interview he would not be getting the job. When your dealing with a job market that is going to have hundreds of applicants for every job out there chances are there is gonna be a person equally as qualified that has a more standard idea of what a professional hair style is. Why wouldn't you give yourself ever chance to land a job if you were looking? Is not cutting your hair really worth not landing a job? You don't have to agree with me and that's fine, you have that right. However i gave my opinion on the situation. I know i would be pretty upset if i went to an interview while having a pony tail and later came to find out i didn't land it because of the pony tail. This is just like when I go to a job interview I wear a 3 piece suit with freshly shined shoes a fresh shave and a fresh haircut. Sure i could get by with a button up and a pair of slacks but in this world appearance is everything whether people wanna believe that or not.

Just sad that in this world people do judge others on how they look. Maybe it is because I am a hairstylist that I just don't think that a persons style of hair should make or break getting a job. I also have seen many professionals sporting ponytails. It is everyone's right to have an opinion and perhaps you have never been judged personally in regards to your hair, I have, and it sucks big time.

It might be sad, but it is just the world we live in. If someone has been on the job a while, fine if they want to sport a pony tail, but when someone is unemployed and looking for work, they really should clean up like James was saying. In a perfect world, nobody would care about appearances, but its just not reality. We will be judged by how we look, whether we like it or not. Some employers interviewing will not even consider a person who is not 100% professional looking. This is a very competitive world we live in. With so many unemployed, a person is competing with hundreds of others for a job opening.

When youre looking for work, you just simply have got to give yourself every possible opportunity for success. Put your best foot forward.

If I knew how to post a poll, I would do it for this topic. That way people could give their opinion anonymously without upsetting anyone. This is obviously a hot button topic and I certainly dont want anyone taking it personally

Don't think anyone is getting hot about it. I know I am not because other people's opinions do not upset me. Everyone is entitled to one.

The old saying "you can't judge abook by it's cover" is so true, if only the world was really that way.

Is it really being judgmental if an employer wants to hire people that fit a certain type of business model?
I would be willing to bet if a jobless person with long hair hired an IMAGE consultant, that consultant would tell them to get a haircut and put on a tie. Thats real world.
A LOT of It depends on what kind of work youre doing . Some jobs have no contact with the public. In that case, sport a fro, skateboard pants ,wear flip flops and a bone in your nose. Who is goin to care except maybe your coworkers?
In the hair business, you probably see a lot more people expressing their individuality. That is great, but is not representative of the whole world. If I could be sporting a big huge afro in my job, I just might ...LOL But I can guarantee it would offend a lot of folks, unfortunately.

Yes, I believe it is being judgemental and can be considered discriminating, but that is the way it is, I get it.

Then there are a lot of judgmental employers out there committing discrimination...Like the girl who one time came in here for a job interview wearing flip flops, shorts and a reefer leaf T-shirt..shortest interview ever...I dont think I was being judgmental, I was looking for someone who best represents my business

Its not discriminatory in anyway to not hire someone who dresses poorly or has bad grooming habit's i.e. pony tail. In a professional work place there is a standard of dress and appearance thats it, period.
