  • Are You Suffering from “Facebook Syndrome”?

Having hundreds of Facebook friends might seem like the ultimate ego-booster, but there’s a downside that goes along with a lengthy list of acquaintances.
In a new study, researchers found that people with the most cyber friends are prone to anxiety and stress, according to a study by psychologists at Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland.
After surveying 200 students at the university, the experts found that the 12 percent of participants who are stressed out with Facebook had an average of 117 friends, while the other 88 percent of participants had an average of 75 friends. More friends meant more to worry about—they reported stressing about “un-friending” unwanted Facebook contacts and whether or not their online persona was entertaining enough for a cohort of followers.
And anxiety isn’t the only negative emotion Facebook triggers. Sixty-three percent of people report delaying responses to friend requests, 32 percent said rejecting friend requests triggered feelings of guilt and 10 percent admitting to disliking friend requests all together.
Despite the fact that Facebook sometimes elicits more stress than benefits, researchers found that most Facebook junkies are afraid to cut off ties with the site for fear of being out of the loop. “Like gambling, Facebook keeps users in a neurotic limbo, not knowing whether they should hang on in there just in case they miss out on something good,” said lead researcher Kathy Charles, Ph.D.

Facebook is nuts. I see people on there sharing their entire lives for public view. What they had for breakfast and when they went to the bathroom..lol...I was dating a girl last year who was addicted to facebook. She would post stuff about working out and such. She would say , "OK, Im going to posting on facebook for the next two hours, I will call you when Im done"...good grief...honestly, if I am interested in a girl to date, and I see her telling every detail of her life on facebook, it makes me not very interested in her. People go on and talk about relationship problems, sex, drinking etc etc...I know chicks who have a fight with their boyfriend and then go and blab about it on facebook...thats nuts!!!!!

Yes, Facebook is trouble IMO. Most people give out WAY TOO much information about themselves. And I also see it as a new outlet for cheaters. It's way too easy to hide cheating and what not on there. I don't like it....just like I didn't like Facebook.

I was glad that when I split from that girl that she never mentioned anything about it on facebook. What she did was buy some sexy outfits and post pics of it all on facebook.LOL.. ...I know a guy who separated from his wife and then went on her facebook page and saw pics of his estranged wife making out with some other dude..needless to say, it was devastating to the poor guy...I bet you all have heard of similar stories of people getting in trouble because of facebook.

I have a facebook page but I don't check it out regularly and I haven't updated it in ... months. The profile is set to private which means that only my friends can see it.

Everything in moderation. Too many get caught up in the depersonalization thing. Id rather participate in my day and my life.
