This was the headline on USA TOday. Saying by the time peak summer driving months hit, gas could be $5. This sucks. I should buy a Ford Fiesta for $500 or just ride a motorcycle. LOL

I remember a few years back when they spiked it was costing over $90 to fill my diesel truck.

I'm lucky for now in that my company provides me a full time rental car for the travel position I'm in at the moment, so gas is covered. But that only lasts until the end of this year.

Fuel prices will indeed skyrocket. What is ridiculous though is that the media has gone easy on Obama, basically not mentioning it at all. But if anyone remembers when Bush was in office and oil hit $90 per barrel, the media was accusing him of every evil thing they could come up with. Oil prices and inflation could cost Obama the presidency.

it was over 5 a gallon in 2008...that helped put me out of biz!!! there was no unrest in this country...just everyone buy gas savers and trading in their trucks and suv's for next too nothing. then, when it went down, they baught back their trucks and suv's and got nothing for their little cars on trade!!
seriously.....it all a bunch of bullshyt used to rape us on gas. every fukin time there's some kind of unrest or problem concerning oil, gas goes up and the oil company record record proffits!!! if the fukin price went up, the proffits would stay the same or drop....what a fukin scam

I think I will hold off on buying another diesel truck until the prices top $4.00 or more. I'm in the market now but maybe I'll get a darn good deal by waiting.

As for the oil prices, it does get confusing, and I do agree that often it is rigging the market to make better profits. However, OPEC has all of the power, and considering they are a unregulated cartel there's not much that can be done unless we drill more of our own, which we don't. In regard to profits, something people often overlook is the margin. Oil companies may indeed have made record profits in 2008, but there profit margins were average, and lower than many other companies. What are they to do, lower there profit margin because they are having a good year? That would be insane and against their commitment to shareholders. The average profit margin for the S&P Energy Sector in 2008 was 9.7%, and the S&P 500 was 8.5%. Compare them to Google who in one quarter of 2008 reported a net profit margin of 25% and you can see that it is not so high. There is an array of factors that determine prices on fuel and I am not by any means an expert on them. Yet, I do realize that when we don't drill, China and India are growing substantially, the Middle East is in chaos, and the U.S. is trying to force us off of oil, then there will be spikes here and there in oil. I don't like it any more than the next person but I have accepted it. I think the best thing may be to invest in oil companies or drilling outfits on the stock market the next time it plunges. And I do believe it will go down again after shooting up. These high prices may set the stage for the next recession.

i understand about opec...but it still dont explain the oil company's proffits...you watch...it'll be at or near record proffits for oil company's
