Regardless of the difference of opinion on these things, the conversations I have read have been great!

its all good fellas. didnt bruce lee develop jeet kun do and wasnt that just taking the wasted movements and fluff out of kung fu?
i dont know my history all that well.
i really dont want all the katas and misc. extra stuff that goes with many arts martial. i want to know how to fight. although i did join up with a man in muay thai who is very traditional and asks us to learn his wai khru. and we seal the ring before competition. both of which are very traditional. but we dont spend much time on anything but effective muay thai. the wai khru is learned before or after class and it is the wai khru of my teachers teacher.
i have respect for all martial arts. even ones not so effective as self defense or as a real fighting form. ketsugo, i certainly have not the experience you have but understand your points even if our opinions are very different.

Actually you and I look for and want the same thing. You are correct about Bruce - however his philosophy was not invented by him. It is a way of thinking that all bushi and warriors use- to know all ways and use what you can perform best. To me there is no such thing as self defense- there is survival which entails many ways of offensive movements. To learn what you are best at and emphasize that is what you do to increase your chances of winning whether it be in the ring and or on the battlefield. However we want to learn how to fight so you and I are not different. I just have had no life other than pursuing fighting methods and understand what works for human beings and what is called fluff or used to adhere to rules. Even the arts that may seem like I talk ill of - I have advanced ranking in- so I do know from a practical standpoint. Muy Thai - is a sport but it is a very effective way to learn how to strike with your hands, legs and knees and elbows- to hit hard- even though I may say its a sport, thos skills can and should be used in real life. To me there is no better method of using those weapons so practice it- but realize many ways of using them have flaws when you are against someone that dont care for fair fighting or rules- so why not practice something else to add to your repitiore- THAT IS THE IDEA BRUCE tried to get across- unfortunately now jeet kune do half ass each art into one - when you are better off learning muy thai from a muy thai master, not one that dabbles - make sense? I have my 3rd degree in Tae kwon do and I studied muy thai- mostly for convenience back then but if I had a choice Id do the muy thai- bone breaking kicks to the legs are much more conducive to saving yor life than the tournament kicks of TKD- BUT my kicks and flexibitiy have benefitted. MOst long time masters no matter what country or art have similiar philosophy- Its the law of nature not my opinions thats what people dont get when they try to read my words
One last point about muy thai- is you learn to hit moving targets (people) LOL you dont waste your time hitting boards- Even in wing chun its good to practice with the dummy but two man drills allow you to work with a live target. These are not my opinions and anyone that spends the next 20 30 years reading and researching different styles and talking with vaious masters - its a common perspective to understand the difference between what is for show and what is for combat. The ceremonial stuff I think you are talking of - IS GOOD. We all need to pay homage to the warriors that died on the battle field. I never have said thats not good. Its all the supoerficial stuff that the pop culture values. In america they al want immediate gratification - they need pieces of paper or colored belts or to prove they are superior to others. These concepts actually go against everything Martial Arts was suppose to stand for. People emphasize these too much because of their ignorance that is fueled by greediness, by TV and sensationalism. COmpetition breeds arrogance, not humility
i must disagree. in BJJ, muay thai and wrestling i have found the most respectful folk. when we spar and a guy gets the best of me, i know i will have an arm around me asking if i am OK and if my nose is broke. we sit down and they go over what i did that made it so easy to punch or kick me. we learn by teaching each other to be better
in a super competitive environment people wont give away secrets as they want to bust you up again. same with wrestling and BJJ. if catch a guy in a sub tell him what he did wrong so i cant anymore
this increases my skill as well as his because i am always trying new stuff and he is plugging holes in his game

Leaders did what others weren't willing to do, now they enjoy the things that others do not.
