I loved my German Shephards. Bruno was born in Holland and was trained there in Police work for a full year. When I got him, he was trained to attack, sniff out stuff, etc. He was an elite dog. Trained for Schtutzund competition. I bought him around 1995 and was 3 thousand then, same dog today could cost $12-15,000..so I couldnt pass up the deal at the time.
I would only buy a German Shephard in Europe. They have very strict breeding laws, unlike the USA where there are no regulations whatsoever. Eurpean GS have to have PERFECT hips or they cant breed. My two dogs lived a long time and NEVER had one single hip problem. Thank God. NEVER buy an American bred german shephard if you want a dog with guranteed good hips...Hope this didnt offend anyone.God Bless...The problem with American german shphards, most have been bred for size with no regard to hip problems. In Europe the dogs are bred for intelligence and athletic ability rather than size or appearance.
I would hope to one day again be able to afford another dog like Bruno.
I now have Bruno Jr from the animal shelter and he cost me 75 bucks. Incredibly, he is in many ways better than any dog I have ever had. German Shphards tend to love and focus on one person. Bruno Jr loves EVERYONE....hahaha
hmh..$3grand! That is well worth it for a Shephard that you know will have good hips the duration though. And so true about our kennel clubs, (UKC, AKC, etc), they really don't care about the best interest of the breed except for the likes of whatever is appealing to people. Like size, as you said. People with their 'toy' breeds, and 'bigger-the-better' ideals...and if that's bringing more money, then they allow people to breed dogs to fit whatever the wants. Hence 100lb Staffordshire Terriers(Pit-Bulls), 4lb Yorshire Terriers, even 100lb German Shephards. I remember when I was a kid. An 80lb German Shephard was a good size male. Now that's a very small male. We had a solid white police trained Shephard when I was little. Which they never use white Shephards. Maybe that's a reason we got him. He was just out of training when we got him. He was badass! Attack trained...the whole 9. He was a killer. He was maybe 70lbs. He was actually one that had to be put down when he was 8yrs old, I think he was. But, wow. He was one way cool dog, and amazing! Shephards are special to me. So are German Shorthair Pointers. Excellent quail dogs. And so loyal. Dobermans. I had one of those for 14yrs. Dobies are another amazing breed. I do love dogs.
